J. M. Lawler (first name Jann) grew up devouring doomed love stories and drawing her favorite tragic characters. Then she didn’t draw them so much and began writing more. Either way, hunched over a desk exploring her mind has been her path. Having completed a Political Science and Korean language degree at the Australian National University, Jann went on to to nothing remotely associated with politics or Korean. She’s the mother of two young adults, but has also been a Police Officer, Intelligence Analyst, speech writer, lazy rock climber, and wannabe intrepid explorer.

Jann prides herself on writing high fantasy love stories with an edge. She loves to transport readers to a world where love is a perilous undertaking, the heroes and heroines

Much of the action is based in the internal landscape, the desires and needs of the characters, their choices and the impact of those choices.

The fictional medieval backdrop frames the characters in a time and place. What really interests me is the impact of events on the individuals in the story.

As for the outline...The River and the Ravages was written very organically. I didn't have a set plan for the story. The characters took me where the story needed to go. Book 2 which is a sequel, has a clear outline. I have deadlines this time!

And writing block is truly a luxury I can't afford. I fit writing in whenever I have pockets of time (I have a regular job!) and when I sit down to write, I bloody well make it count.

Thanks for your question Tonima.

The Blade Itself (The First Law, #1)The Blade Itself by Joe Abercrombie

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

A barbarian. A pretty-boy good with a sword. A crippled torturer. And so begins Joe Abercrombie's first book in his First Law series. The first book I read in Joe Abercrombie's First Law series was book #6, Red Country. My expectations were pretty high as Red Country is bloody awesome. Which is not a fair way to begin book #1 when the a... Read more of this blog post »

“Why do I love being a writer? Because we love life a lot. We feel it deeply. We live it richly, often without much money. There's simply no one better to experience rain with on a scorching summer's day.”

“...the opposite of love is not hate -- it's apathy. It's not giving a damn. If somebody hates me, they must "feel" something ... or they couldn't possibly hate. Therefore, there's some way in which I can get to them.”
Leo F. Buscaglia

“Is it love, obsession, infatuation? You don't know. You think of a strange and beautiful word you read about once, Limerance, a psychological term, meaning an obsessive love, a state that's almost like a drug. Need like a wolf paces the perimeter of your world, back and forth, back and forth, never letting up. ...You're appalled by the new appetites within you, kicking their feet and clawing to get out.”
