The title, Lost in the Reflecting Pool, is based on the myth of Echo and Narcissus from Ovid’s Metamorphoses.Whereas Narcissus is overly self-absorbed, Echo is overly other-absorbed - she has actually lost her voice. In Diane's memoir, this is the metaphor for her marriage and it is often the metaphor of many marriages/relationships. Is losing your voice in a relationship something you can relate to?

I was truly interchangeable with anyone else, even after twenty years and the two children we struggled so much to have, and once I wasn’t useful, I no longer existed. For me, it was a relationship; for him, I was a need-gratifying object.”
