I don't regret, however, that I enjoyed a wonderful career as a professional musician for nearly a decade. After that, I wrote professionally but not fiction. I am grateful now to have the luxury of devoting full time to my novels. It might have happened sooner if I had been more focused, so that would be my advice to an aspiring writer. Get to work, keep the vision strong, and go for it---now! (less)

When I was eleven, I used to dream of becoming a nun or a Spanish dancer despite being neither Catholic nor Spanish nor a dancer, just a boringly average girl growing up in a boringly average Midwest town. Even then, I was vaguely aware of the disturbing dichotomy of my desires, though years passed before I would be forced to confront the powerful forces battling for possession of my soul. (less)
