Here’s me in a nutshell: I born in Liverpool, England and my first experience of writing was as trainee reporter on the Liverpool Echo - a job I loved and in which lifelong friendships were forged over deadlines and quite a lot of beer.
I worked my way up to become Editor of the Liverpool Daily Post, but after five years at the helm I finally tackled my long-standing ambition to write a novel.

The idea for the story came to me a few years after someone I know discovered that his mother had been diagnosed with Huntington's disease. I was struck by the ripple effect of this devastating condition - the fact that every child of an HD patient has a 50% chance of inheriting the faulty gene that causes it. I was very much inspired by the families within the HD community that I spoke to as part of my research. I was struck by their often remarkable outlook, the determination to live life to the full, even if the future remained uncertain. It was this that drove my ambition to write about an inevitably challenging topic with a lightness of touch. I wanted to make readers laugh as well as cry, to escape with my character Jess to France and ultimately deliver an uplifting message.(less)

Whether a book cover appeals to a reader is a very subjective thing. It’s the same for authors - it isn’t always the case that we love the jackets publishers produce for our novels. I’ve always felt quite lucky on this front; I’ve never had one I’ve hated and I’ve always worked with fairly collaborative editors so if I’v...

“We assume good health is our God-given right, to be taken for granted, as if we’ll always feel this well. Serious illness is meant to be something that happens to other people. People in the newspapers or on Facebook, sharing noble stories and personal battles. Only, overnight, we became the other people.”
Catherine Isaac, You, Me, Everything

“That was her attitude about everything in life: don’t moan, don’t dwell, just get on with it and make the best of what you’ve got. She never wavered from it.”
