Sally Bend is an author, editor, columnist, and reviewer. Although shy and polite (she is, after all, Canadian), she loves to boldly and boisterously express herself through stories that bend the binaries of gender and sexuality. Bending the Bookshelf is where she hangs her bra and panties at the end of a long day, but her work can also be found in the pages of Frock Magazine.

Her newest release, Futanari Moans and the Mummy's Hand (Job), is the first in a series of standalone pulp erotica adventures, soon to be followed by the erotic epic fantasy quests of a fabulous crossdressing warlock.

When she’s not wandering the forest, talking to herself, and generally ignoring the strange looks of those around her, Sally can be found online at http:

I just let my mind wander as I walk, and try not to think anything specific. Before long there will be a scene or even a snippet of dialogue that flashes through my thoughts.

My biggest challenge at that point is trying to either remember it or somehow write it down. The nice thing about a cellphone is that I can dictate notes to myself and not look like completely crazy - so long as nobody really pays attention to what I am saying, of course. I have gotten some really odd (and really disgusted) looks, but every once in a while I will find a knowing smile pass by.(less)

Honestly, it does not matter what you write, just keep your fingers typing or your pen moving. Write whatever comes to mind, whether it be a letter to someone that you will never send, or a personal fantasy that you will never publish. Get in the habit of writing something every day.

Once you have something written (and this is the hardest part for me), let somebody else read it. It is hard to let go, to trust that it is good enough, but you have to start somewhere . . . and it is usually not as bad as you fear. Whether the feedback you get is in the form of editorial critique or just feel-good praise, it all helps.(less)

Post No Bills
She made me slather the wall with glue and stick the garish poster directly on top of the “No Bills” sign. The very idea made her chuckle. It was that same soft, suggestive laugh that I’d first heard from behind me, before all went dark, days ago.

Days ago? Weeks? Was that right? I didn’t think it could be months. Could it? No matter.

Hard to believe the picture was of me. The flawl... Read more of this blog post »

Oh, no apologies necessary, hon! I know how life gets in the way, and I just hope you've come out of it okay. So happy to hear back from you, regardless of how long it took. :)

message 39: by Barrie

Barrie Abalard Dear Sally,

I am truly, deeply sorry that I am years late in responding to your review of my novel, "Alice in Shtuppingland." I disappeared for a while because of life, so I hope that you will please forgive my not acknowledging your generous review before now.

Thank you so much for such a thoughtful, detailed review that also provided me with excellent feedback on places that could have been better. I am simply thrilled that you grokked what the book was truly all about, and that you enjoyed it.

Even though the book was semi-autobiographical, at some point Alice became her own person, with the story going in a direction that my own life did not. That fact was, and remains, one of the more satisfying aspects of tackling the storyline and the characters.

It's clear you received pleasure from reading it. I couldn't ask for a higher compliment! And, who knows? There may just be a Nineties Alice book in the works, only it's a suspense, but still based on life...

Thank you again from the bottom of my heart.

Best regards,

Barrie Abalard

message 29: by Sally

Sally It's interesting, Ella, but also very dated, and more cold/clinical than erotic. Definitely an interesting read, and certainly quite brutal. As for being tamed down, I guess it depends on the edition. It's become a public domain text, you have to watch what you're buying. I have the Grove Press editions, and they seem pretty authoritative.

Justine was a better 'story' but 120 Days is almost required reading for anybody interested in the origins of S&M. :)

message 28: by Ellen

Ellen Hey There,

You're the only one of my GR friends to have read 120 Days of Sodom. I was just wondering if you recommend it. I like brutal, but have heard the book's been pretty tamed down. Is it worth the read?
