I was born and raised in North Carolina, spending time each summer at my grandmother's house in the Blue Ridge Mountains. (Maybe you can guess where the idea for the setting of Empty Chairs emerged.) I received my BA in Psychology from UNC-Chapel Hill, and my MSSW from UW-Madison. I've lived in Madison, WI most of my adult life. I greatly enjoyed a lifetime career in mental health/psychotherapy, and retired in 2015. I've always loved to read, once I mastered the difficulty of learning to read as a child. I love fiction with complex and interesting characters who live in my head and heart like beloved family, beautiful, lyrical word-craft, and intriguing, universal stories. How do you deal with writer’s block?

Anne Davidson Keller For me, the worst of it comes from not making myself sit down to the computer. If you're anything like me, you can find lots of other things that…moreFor me, the worst of it comes from not making myself sit down to the computer. If you're anything like me, you can find lots of other things that really *need* tending to: toilets to scrub, groceries to buy, reading the news on my phone. Yeah, you get it. The best thing I ever do is to make myself sit down at the computer. I tell myself - and it's absolutely true - that I'll feel so much better if I work on the manuscript. If I'm still resisting, I'll break down that avoidance into tiny steps: set a timer for a few minutes so that if I'm really stuck, I don't have to stay at it for too long; open the laptop, find the document, look at the page I worked on last and begin reading. Usually at that point, I'm rolling. I have to turn off the censor in my head, and let myself just write some words. Editing can happen at another sitting. If this is an editing session, and I'm stuck, I try opening a different (new) page. I'll ask myself a question about the character I can't quite understand, or how the scene looks, smells, sounds, feels. Or I'll research some information if I'm stuck because I can't quite get a sense of what should happen. If I sort out the place of stuckness a bit more, I can usually get going.(less)
