Bruce Hartman has worked as a pianist, bookseller and attorney. The author of ten novels, he lives with his wife in Philadelphia. He has been writing fiction for many years.

His latest book (published in March 2020), THE PHILOSOPHICAL DETECTIVE RETURNS, is a sequel to his most popular book, THE PHILOSOPHICAL DETECTIVE, published in 2014. Both novels feature the iconic Argentine writer Jorge Luis Borges wrestling with an extraordinary series of crimes and the equally baffling conundrums of literature and philosophy, including Zeno's paradoxes, the mind/body problem, and the mysteries of destiny, personal identity and artistic creation. Kirkus Reviews called THE PHILOSOPHICAL DETECTIVE "a suspenseful, pitch-perfect novel.. an intelligent, ori

“Borges stirred the metal straw around in his cup and went on: “If two brothers, starting on the day they were born, read all the same books in the same order, they would have the same ethics.  In a moral sense they would be the same man.  You or I, depending on the syllabus, might be Howard Vaughan.  Cain might be Abel.”
Bruce Hartman, The Philosophical Detective

“Like all old men, I nurse the illusion that if I can remember enough of the past and imagine enough of the future, I will never reach the end of my life, or if I do, it will take forever to get there.”
Bruce Hartman, The Philosophical Detective

“Hope you enjoyed our library,” Dr. Corwin said.  “Not as big as some you’ve been in, I’m sure.” “To a blind man,” Borges said, “every library is infinite.” “Infinite?” the doctor laughed, searching Borges’s face for a glimmer of irony. “Infinite because, to one who can’t see, it contains every book that was ever written, every thought the human mind is capable of.”
