I'm a freelance writer and German-English translator with a PhD in philosophy (McGill, 2013) and an LLM in international law (Open, 2019). My work focuses on the writings of historical German women philosophers, especially Karoline von Günderrode (1780-1806). I've also translated and published work on Bettina von Arnim, Dorothea Veit-Schlegel, Lou Andreas-Salomé, Hedwig Dohm, and other 19th and early 20th century philosophers. ...more

On the philosophy front, I think it's time to dive into some Herder, Hemsterhuis and Hölderlin.(less)

I have the opposite problem: I'm always full of ideas and enthusiasm, and there's never enough time to work on everything I want to. Worse: I have CFS, so I often have to step away from my work to recover my energy when I'm dying to keep going. Sometimes one piece of work isn't progressing well and I need to take a break from it, but I don't think of this as a block: sometimes, ideas just need to percolate and sort themselves out. I always have another project pressing for my attention, so I work on whichever seems the most urgent and return to paused projects when I feel excited about them again.(less)

Why We Should Read Frances Power Cobbe as a Philosopher – Guest Blog by Alison Stone

Until recently, women were systematically excluded from the history of philosophy – so systematically that it used to be assumed that there were no women philosophers in the past. Women have even been left out of the canon when they were famous in their own times. The Anglo-Irish philosopher Frances Power Cobbe (1822–1904) is a case in point.

In later nineteenth-century Britain, Cobbe was one

Karoline von Günderrode
“We see single symptoms, hear one heartbeat of the century, and want to conclude from this that it is diseased.”
Karoline von Günderrode

Karoline von Günderrode
“[B]ecause we see only a few features of the immeasurable carpet into which the earth spirit weaves the times, let us be humble. There is a surrender in which alone lies bliss and perfection and peace, a kind of contemplation, which I might call dissolution in the divine; let us strive to reach this, and not complain about the destinies of the universe.”
Karoline von Günderrode

Karoline von Günderrode
“Why do human beings cling with such strength to thoughts and opinions, as if they were what is eternal? Why can they die for them, when precisely these thoughts are lost with their death?”
Karoline von Günderrode

Karoline von Günderrode
“Why, then, is everything on earth good except human beings? Why should they alone become different than they are?”
Karoline von Günderrode

Karoline von Günderrode
“There is an infinite force, an eternal life, that is everything that is, that was and will become, that engenders itself in mysterious ways, that remains eternal during all change and dying. It is at the same time the ground of all things and the things themselves, the condition and the conditioned, the creator and the creature, and it divides and separates itself in various figures, becomes sun, moon, stars, plants, animal and human being together, and flows through itself in fresh streams of life and contemplates itself in human beings in holy humility.”
