Shortly after being born, I served in the U.S. Army as a tank commander where I learned how to blow junk up, eliminate bad guys with economy, and lead good men through chemical, biological, and radioactive environments. Life was weird.

Whereas these skills prepared me for civilian life in metropolitan arcadias such as Chicago, L.A., and Philadelphia, I instead decided to go to a university of higher learning. After arming myself with a BS degree from the University of Colorado's School of Journalism in Boulder, I ventured out into the world as a reporter where I proceeded to hone my skills at pissing people off with the written word. Life was better.

But as fate would have it, I finally grew up and took a real job working for state

Both "Black Hearts White Bones" and my forthcoming novel "Aphrodite's Whisper" cover topics that have not received a lot of attention. For years, I was fascinated by the idea that there were two women who both started off their lives being passed off as males, both became skilled "swordsmen," both became pirates, and both "pleaded their bellies" at their trial, and yet there was almost nothing about them in literature. Even their actual history usually only rates a mention while their male counterparts are widely known and thoroughly explored. As a creative person, I saw their story as a blank canvas and felt compelled to give them the attention they deserve.

"Aphrodite's Whisper" has similar elements in that most people know nothing about the U.S. Lifesaving Service other than it eventually becomes the Coast Guard, if that. But what these men did as lifesavers was nothing like what the Coast Guard does today. And like BHWB, the history is only the backdrop to the story, it is the characters that give life to the history. (In case you are wondering, "Aprodite's Whisper" is a classic love story similar to "Legends of the Fall" and "Cold Mountain." It is not a romance novel...not that there's anything wrong with that genre if it's your cup of tea.)

I am very fortunate in that I love doing research. I get lost in it. But the truth is, only about 2 percent of that research ends up in my stories as factual elements. The rest of the research gives me the context of the period and the people and provides the fabric of the story. I would like to believe that all the time I spend on research is an aspect that makes my stories at least a little better than the average fare...but you are the better judge of that.

Thank you so much for asking.(less)

That's where my newspaper writing pays off. If you have a deadline you don't get to wait for creative motivation to move you. Getting paid is your motivation. When it comes to creative writing I may only force out a few paragraphs when I hit a block, but I keep pushing through it. Write something. It will probably need to be re-written, but I've made progress. At some point the right words and thoughts will come and it all gets easier again. Stopping for inspiration is death. Once you commit to writing a story, never break from your routine.(less)
