My characters are real.

I love using my friends in my books, I can introduce their personality giving a flat character dimension. In Behind the Fan, I used my dear friend Roxy Black. I loved her character and am pleased to hear that she was just as thrilled!

Behind the Fan - Personable & Wistful

Behind the Fan – Personable and Wistful Review 5.0 out of 5 stars

Park Reader

I enjoy a story that can catch my attention quickly. Behind The Fan did just that. I couldn’t wait to read about how Dottie and Nicky finally got together and how Dottie was able to raise her little brother at such a young age herself. Not to mention reading the history and mob stories about a location that I’m familiar with today. It was fascinating and hit home when thinking about lost loved ones. We all hope our loved ones are really that close.
I kind of hope there will be another book telling us about their married life and kids!

Behind the Fan - Amazing Story

Laura Furuta
5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing story

5 out of 5 stars
The story Behind the Fan by Caroline Walken is a wonderful book that I fell in love with each chapter that I read. I found myself getting lost in the pages and not wanting to put it down until I was finished. The story is an emotional journey that I am so glad that I took. I loved reading about the character of Dorothy Kennedy-Denham. She is an amazing woman. She is sassy, independent, and strong. She is a woman whose family decides that it is time for her to go into a nursing home because of episodes they call an absence of presence. As they sift through her life they soon find out about a past that they never knew about. What do the items in her home reveal about her past? Dorothy is such a wonderful, caring, and compassionate person. Even while there are times when she has her episodes she has a sense of humor. This story includes passion, desire, love, and self-sacrifice. What unfinished business does Dorothy still have? Read this book to find out. Friendship and trying to find one’s way in life is also part of the story-line. There are parts of this story that are heartwarming. I enjoyed how the author wrote with enough detail that you felt that you were there with the characters. This is a wonderfully written book that I would highly recommend reading. It is a story that I found myself thinking about even after I had finished.

So when I first read the blurb for this book I will admit I was intrigued, I had no idea what kind of story I was in for so I was really looking forward to jumping right in. Behind the Fan was a great read! It was nice to read something a little different and I loved the uniqueness of the story-line. I really enjoyed the characters and reading their story. I haven’t read anything by this author previously but I really liked her writing style. I was engaged from the very first page and as mentioned before the uniqueness of the story-lineBehind the Fan along with great writing meant that my interest was kept from beginning to end.
I really enjoyed this story and would definitely recommend it to paranormal fans – I don’t think that you will be disappointed at all! I hope to read more from this author in the future!

Behind the Fan By Caroline Walken
This is my first book by this author and I loved it. I loved how her writing style went from present to past with ease and no confusion. This book is about an older woman who has dementia. This story took me on an emotional roller coaster ride that kept me turning pages to find out what would happen next. I felt as if I was right there with the characters and going through the life this older woman has had. I highly recommend this book.

What a beautifully written book. The author does an amazing job weaving the plot together, developing these fantastic characters, and drawing the reader deeply into the tale. I appreciated how well the story developed, even when shifting from past to present (not all authors do this successfully). This was a mesmerizing page turner that I couldn’t put down until I finished it completely. Wonderful book.

Behind the Fan...

A little bit from the new book, enjoy!

The hospital scene...

Dottie shuffled her feet beneath the covers; even with socks due to her failing circulation, her feet were cold. Someone walked soundlessly past the room, further beyond her door she heard muffled conversation followed by quiet laughter. She considered that perhaps living in a nursing home won’t be so bad she would at least have people around her. Presently she went for days at a time without uttering a word. It was true that her family visited, her great-granddaughters coming to see her more often than their mothers did. Then there were the hours that she shuffled from room to room in silence. Seated at her picture window, she watched as families exit then re-enter the homes that surrounded hers. None of them looked her way.

The world lived around her; she did not live within it.

Tears stung her eyes, tears she had not felt for many years. The last time she had cried was after she lost her Nicky. It happened days after the funeral and long after the friends and family had left. The wall of emotion hit her, after the long illness that he suffered; she initially felt relief. She was thankful that his pain and suffering had ended. Then one day she stood at the sink and rinsed dishes, she ran water over his favorite coffee cup she had absentmindedly used. She emotionally fell to pieces, a rarity for her.

Dottie stared at the flat white ceiling the tears subside replaced by a soft smile. All and all she has had a good life, not everyone was lucky enough to love that deeply. She remembered a time where she would catch him watching her. Nicky always looked at her with those dark, needy eyes, drinking her in. Dottie felt both exhilarated and alarmed by the emotion he evoked in her. She still recalls that first soft kiss, and then much later in the relationship, how good it felt entwined with him as dawn broke. In the beginning, it was a challenge to keep her head whenever he was near. Handsome and tall with an ornery twinkle in those soft brown eyes at all times. He was dangerous, and nothing she needed but everything she wanted. Dark hair, tall and broad-shouldered...the man was sin on earth to her. The old woman laid her head back; although weary, she resisted sleep having found comfort in her memories. Her mind tossed back his words, those that gave her solace in those early days after he passed. She expected them to fade over time until she no longer heard his voice within her. Instead, as she grew weaker, his words became stronger within her. Dottie wondered if anyone would believe their story and she regretted not having written it down before now. She feared her weary mind would never fully recall everything. It was a story of strength, one of love and partnership. Her girls could benefit from hearing it. Dottie turned to glance at her reflection; it was now deep in the night the city beyond her window slept. The woman in the glass bore silver hair and was thin, her eyes a watered version of their brilliance. Like her memory, she too had faded. She wondered if her family would see whom she had been or would they remain blinded by the frail being she had become. She had one more go left in her but after this; she was done. She had to make the most of this.

To the unadorned walls she promised, “I am nearly ready Nicky, soon darling, very soon.”
