Rose Hawthorne: The Irish Wanders follows Rose, a celebrity author in her early seventies, who dislikes the limelight but does like Hermes scarfs, round violet sunglasses, and old colonial hotels. One day, she receives a letter asking her to visit Newgrange, Ireland and discover something that has been hidden there for a thousand years.
She asks her granddaughter Samantha to accompany her, but she hadn’t expected her to continually post photos of their progress on her Instagram account. An encounter with an old love and an unexpected discovery leads Rose deeper into the past, where she finds she must make a hard decision about her future.

Sam glanced at her grandmother’s well-lined face. It was flushed and her green eyes were shining. It was nice to see her so excited and not worrying about books or people following her around Toronto.
Rose turned to her large floral Louis Vuitton bag, snapped it open and reached her hand inside. “Let’s take a look, shall we.”
“This is so exciting!” said Sam peering inside.
“KNOCK. KNOCK.”
Sam gasped involuntarily, turned her gaze away from the bag and looked to her left. The guide from Newgrange was standing under an umbrella and banging on her window. What did she want? Had she realized that her grandmother had taken something?
It was a good thing the windows had fogged up a little; the woman couldn’t see inside very well. Rose snapped her bag shut, and Sam carefully rubbed her hand on the steamy window. A woman’s grim ruddy face and large nose pushed up against the window.
Sam rolled down the window a little. “Um, what can I do for you?” she asked stiffly, feeling the first stirring of panic start to bubble up down in the pit of her stomach.
“I was wondering if I could have a word with you,” the woman said.
Sam gulped and glanced at Rose, who gave her a look that said it wasn’t time to explain anything.
“About what?” Sam said to the woman cautiously.
“It’s about something that was found in Newgrange. I’m glad I caught you before you drove off.”

Review:Rose Hawthorne was an established author going to Ireland to solve a mystery, hoping that it might make a good story. With her as a traveling companion was her surly 17-year-old granddaughter.
The narrative was easy and compelling. The archeological and landscape scenes were so vivid, so rich with culture and history. I enjoyed the snarky and sarcastic banter between the grandmother and granddaughter. Rose was a smart, crafty, old broad—so deep and knowledgeable, yet so bold and brave, like Indiana Jones.
We get a surprising twist when they discover a medallion that gives vision. To learn more, Rose reconnects with an old flame, who recounts a legend behind the medallion, fascinating the characters enough to begin a quest to find the other lost medallions.
“Bring the medallions together [so] the sisters will be reunited.”
The characters run into several unexplained mysteries, and it was interesting to see how it all tied together.
A good read!

As luck would have it, Dylan Scott, the school’s notorious “bad boy,” is leaning against the tall front counter, smirking at me. I’m studiously ignoring him and trying not to think what a great story this will make for him to share with friends later.
“Ava, dear,” the compassionate office lady croons. “I have these gym sweats you can wear.” She holds up a tattered pair of blue sweatpants that look at least two sizes too big. I gag a little at the thought of them coming off the body of a sweaty boy who probably farted and scratched himself while wearing them.
“I’m afraid you’ve run us out of shirts.” Her face is all droopy with apology. “The only thing I can offer you is this one. I promise it’s been laundered. Looks like it’ll fit, though.”
I bite my bottom lip to hold in the strange mewling sound that wants to escape. “That’s my shirt.”
Dylan barks out a laugh and Mrs. Jensen glowers at him. He shrugs and holds out a hand to me. “Can you blame me?”
I step forward to snatch the clothes from Mrs. Jensen. The shirt used to be my favorite. It’s a flirty little button-up with cap sleeves. The cut makes me look like I have more of a figure than I do. But it’s as white as a fresh snowfall. Or it was until the spaghetti lunch incident. I must have left it in the bathroom after I changed that day.
Review: Ava was the high school klutz. She couldn’t help it. Things just happened—things that she couldn’t know would happen. But one thing she did know was that “love [was] not in [her] high school graduation plan."
All she had as her sanctuaries were her friend’s house and the animal shelter. When a new volunteer arrives at the shelter, she’s shocked to see that it’s Bad Boy Dylan. Oh crud!
Most of the time Ava spends her time trying NOT to look like a fool in front of the sexy bad boy, even though someone like him could never fall for someone like her. Right?
Story had an easy and relatable narrative. At times, however, it had some lengthy narratives that seemed trivial and pointless. It was kind of slow for the most part. Ava was shy, quiet, and clumsy, making her a relatable character for a lot of readers. Her voice in the story was often refreshing and witty.
Overall, this was a fairly nice YA romance.

Blog Tour: WILD AT HEART by Cindy Rogers
Children's Book
Ros Webb (Illustrator)
Date Published: March 10, 2022
Publisher: BookBaby
When Maybel, the country hound, wanders into Cindy's kitchen, she may just have been looking for food, but instead finds a lifelong friend. The duo finds adventures in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Alongside fellow goats and horses, they munch on crusts of avocado toast by the beach in Santa Monica. It is a story of rescue, friendship, love and learning to stay wild at heart.
Review: A story about Cindy and a wild dog named Maybel. “Cindy wished she could be her pet, but kept telling herself, ‘Wild dogs don’t become pets.”
Regardless, an endearing friendship blossomed between the two, who did everything together. See how “the dog from the wilderness became a well-trained, well-mannered California canine.”
The illustrations were sketchy, colorful, and fun to look at. I love seeing dogs find a “forever home.”
A sweet story and a great read!

Author of Wild at Heart, a book that grew organically from my experience of living on and owning a rescue farm in Blairsville, Georgia. On the farm we have 40 rescue animals we have taken on over the last 20 years. I also live part time in Los Angeles, where I raised my two now grown and married children, and my new baby grandson.
Sometimes you feel called to be in connection with something or someone, like a mission. I feel it with my family, with my rescue animals, and I felt it in a special way with Maybel. I spent seven months in Georgia when Covid broke out. That is where the true story of Wild at Heart and Maybel the rescue dog, took place. In the beginning of the pandemic I was considering opening up my farm as a retreat center, particularly for wellness and yoga events. I envisioned it as a place where people could be in relationship with the animals, the gardens, and themselves. But Covid arrived and dashed this fantasy.
However there was this dog that kept hanging with the animals on my farm. She would be there, then she would be gone. One day, when I was hiking on the property, she started following me up and down the trails. She was sweet, and let me pet her, and given how dirty that left my hands, I knew she lived in the woods. But one day she came down to my house, so I let her in and fed her. That started the slow process of our relationship. She would come and go, but soon she was doing more staying, and I began to get attached. We were bonding and began our wonderful friendship.
I think I identified with her because I had been a bit of a wild child myself.
During those early pandemic months she was my constant companion, and I couldn’t imagine leaving her behind when I received the joyful news that my daughter was expecting back in Los Angeles. So I decided to bring her with me, and build a life with her in Santa Monica with my family including my baby grandson Leo.
The writing of the book happened organically over the course of a year. I had never written a book before and it felt like such a heartfelt story that I needed to share. While researching illustrators I fell in love with the work of Roz Webb, who lives in Copenhagen. We worked together entirely online! What carried me through the process of edits, rewrites, and redesigns was my deep passion for this story, and the belief that children, parents, and grandparents alike could attach and fall in love with it.

Review: SISTERS by Raina Telgemeier
“Why did I ever ask for a sister?"
It just wasn’t all that it was cracked out to be. The vivid expression of Raina’s face just spoke volumes. Loved it!
As the sisters prepare for a family trip, memories of their early days flood the pages. All the whining and crying. Ahrghhh! Now it’s all about punching, screaming, glaring, and fighting. It’s all about just putting up with each other. Oh yeah, sisters are grand!
The illustrations were just hilarious—so fun and colorful! The story tells it exactly how it is with sisters.
“The cousin I wish was my sister barely knows me at all…and the sister I actually have hates me.”
But were sisters really so bad?
A heartwarming and fun tale!

Excerpt: VERB TENSES by M.G. da Mota
Prologue
Coast of Alentejo, Portugal, December 1969
The little girl opened her eyes wide, trying to pierce the darkness. She lifted her head off the pillow, listening intently. All she could hear was the wind blowing wildly, the thunder, and the ocean, raging, beating against the sand and the surrounding cliffs. The house shook with the fury of the storm, as if the sea were angry at its presence and wanted to wash it away. Scared, the little girl pulled the covers over her head and squeezed her eyes shut, hoping for sleep. Images of fairy tales floated into her mind. She remembered the story her mother’s best friend had read earlier. It was the story of a little girl, like herself, who went on a summer picnic with her teddy-bear friends. She smiled. A feeling of warmth spread in her chest, her body relaxed, her mind began to drift; and then, she heard it.
A scream. A horrible scream, louder than the storm, from somewhere in the house. Jerking upright, heart thumping, her breath accelerated, became noisy, difficult. She stared into the darkness, listening. There was no mistake. The screams continued then stopped, abruptly. There was a short silence, then voices. Angry voices. Then the sound of glass splintering on the floor. She whispered, afraid,
‘Mummy … mummy, I’m scared.’
Lightning slashed the darkness, briefly brightening the room through the gaps in the shutters. Thunder was deafening. Trembling the little girl rolled out of bed and walked to the door. Opening it slowly she peered into the hall. Light spilled out from the open door of her mother’s bedroom. Relief flooded through her. The storm had woken Mummy too. Running in she cried,
‘Mummy, I’m scared of—’.
Her mother’s bed was empty. Only her baby brother was there, peacefully asleep in his cot. She noticed the room was somehow different. There were clothes, books, scattered carelessly over the floor; a stool lying upside down; a chair on its side. The little girl didn’t understand. Mummy liked everything just so. Mummy always told her off when she forgot to tidy her room and put away her toys. Her heart thumped again. Something must be wrong for Mummy not to clean her own bedroom. Her fear increased. For one scary moment she thought she might have been left alone with the baby.
The screams came again. From downstairs. Hesitantly she walked towards the staircase, stopping on the landing to look through the railings. The stairs were in complete darkness but a strong beam of light escaped through the half open door of the lounge.
The voices were still shouting. They spoke ugly, the little girl thought. She heard bad words. Mummy had told her that little girls should never say them. There was a sudden heavy thud. Fright gripped her. Perhaps there were burglars. She must be brave and help Mummy. Carefully, silently, moving as she had once seen her kitten move while stalking a grasshopper, the little girl began walking down the stairs towards the beam of light.

When I turned from the fire to respond, the woman hushed me. “You have much work to do, my dear, now rest.” She held me in her arms, swallowing me up in the most comforting sleep I could remember for a very long time, maybe ever.
Hours later, the warm glare of the sun’s first light sliced through the trees of the forest, waking me from a sound sleep. The air was cool and crisp, and I was laying next to the fire that had burned down to smoldering coals. Suddenly, realizing I wasn’t dreaming, I was in unfamiliar surroundings. I remembered the woman I had met the evening before, but she was not within eyeshot. Glancing around to get my bearings, it was shocking to be sitting in the middle of a small clearing of the woods. Several teepees made of tall tree branches wrapped in animal skins sat along the edge of the clearing. Standing and sliding out from under the animal skin blanket, I looked down to see myself dressed in unfamiliar clothes, and leather moccasins covering my feet. I had the strange sensation I was in a familiar place, but still not where I belonged.
Before I took one step, I scanned the area. Then something compelled me to approach one of the dwellings. As I drew closer, an Indian brave stepped out. Grabbing me by the arm, he pulled me into the teepee and shoved me to the ground. Walking to the edge of the space, he retrieved a large round basket and shot it at me with such force I thought it might fray. Shocked, I gazed up at him, he looked oddly familiar, but it was his eyes that gave him away. These new experiences were teaching me that the eyes were indeed the window to the soul. Those dark brown eyes were those of a man I knew all too well. Makya! Could this be Makya? Had I known him through other lifetimes? Although he spoke in a different tongue, it somehow translated perfectly for me.
He was angry and started barking. “You are a lazy dreamer. Why you insist on leaving our dwelling and choose to lay with the fire in place of me is a mystery. You need to do your gathering, and you are late in starting your day. I am off to hunt. You will obey me and begin behaving like a squaw worthy of me.”
I heard footsteps outside as someone was approaching. “Calian, are you coming? We are late; the morning is half over.”
Stunned, my eyes widened. Makya? Although the man called him Calian, the spirit was too familiar. It was the evil spirit I’d come to know as Makya! It didn’t look like him, but it was his temperament.
As I pushed up to my knees, Calian glared down at me, striking out in my direction. Although his hand never touched me, a force knocked me back to the ground. As I raised my hand to him, he grabbed my wrist, twisting it, and forced me back to the ground.
“You know better. Do not use your powers on me. I will strike you down every time. You are no match for me!”
Panic rose in me as I struggled to understand what was happening. If this brave was indeed Makya by a different name, how did we get here?
Pushing through the opening in the structure, he paused without turning to me. “Do not return this afternoon unless you have filled that basket with berries and some healing herbs. You must learn your place and mind your responsibilities. Do not make me the laughingstock of this tribe one more time!”
I listened to his footsteps as he jogged off, mounted his horse, and rode away before I got up from the ground.
