Supernatural horrors start manifesting all around Leigh and her new co-workers, and soon she starts having disturbing nightmares of impossible creatures calling out to her. To make matters worse, Leigh’s violent ex-boyfriend is close on her tail, leaving a trail of bodies in his wake. What happens to Grandma's house when she doesn't tidy up? Well, you're about to find out. And it's . . . rather dangerous! Thank goodness Owen and Bandit are there. They have ultra-special skills, but they will have to be extra brave to save the day, and Grandma! Will they win the epic battle?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt One:
“Grandmaaaaaaaaa! Are you in there?”
Grandma usually answered the door on the first buzz.
She was nearly always close by, making fresh orange juice for Owen's arrival from school. Owen liked his afternoons with Grandma before he had to go home and do homework, eat his spinach, clean his room and other such booooring things.
Bzzzt... BZZZZZZT! Where was Grandma?
Owen wanted his oatmeal-choco-blast-moon-pie cookies too.
Bzzzt... BZZZZZZT!
Still, no Grandma.
Tired of waiting in the cold, Owen turned the frozen handle. The door clicked open and he stepped inside.
“Grandmaaaaaaaaa!"
“Grandmaaaaaaaaa!"
Not a creak. Not a sound.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Review: Where was Owen’s grandma? The kitchen was messy and grandma’s black cat was there, but there was no grandma. Where was she? So Owen decided to investigate.
Owen goes from room to room, each one containing a strange peculiarity.
The illustrations were cute and colorful, vividly portraying the story in comic-style panels. The whole thing was a fun, little adventure of hide-and-seek…until he finds the culprit that caused the big, multicolored mess.
“I’ve been a bit careless. I’m supposed to be old and wise, but, alas, when you don’t put things away…well, that’s what happens…Yarni happens.”
So vibrant and fun! A great read and a great lesson to clean up, keep things tidy, and put toys away. Highly recommended!

Excerpt One:
As she usually did in the early, pre-dawn hours, Lyuba was digging roots, in the dark of the crescent moon, and every so often replanting a good piece of a root to grow next year. The day before she had picked herbs, during that time when the essential oils are at their strongest, before they could get evaporated by the midday sun. Where she searched was her favorite place, the place where the energies were strongest. Surprisingly, it was the old church graveyard built on a slight mound just outside of the rural Italian village of Frascati, which is why the other gypsy women stayed away. Unlike Lyuba, they feared being so near the dead. They believed that being near death would hasten their own, therefore they refused to go there. Lyuba, however, saw death as the natural and necessary progression of life, in another form, in a different dimension. She found comfort and solace in its nearness.
A creek ran nearby, and a tall, unkempt yew tree grew near the entrance to the graveyard, poisonous, but giving off positive energies. It was a place Lyuba knew well, having discovered it from earlier times when the travelers came this way. It was there where she found peace.
She would prepare her potions from the roots, bark, and hard seeds she gathered and make decoctions by soaking them overnight and boiling them the next day. Some of the decoctions she would add honey or sugar to; others she would thicken into syrup or add lard to make ointments and salves. The freshest herbs she saved for her oils.
Once her potions were ready, she would take them into the village to sell. Coughs or colds, rheumatism, cuts and bruises, burns—it didn't matter. She knew what remedy was necessary to relieve pain, create lustrous hair, revive the impotent, whiten teeth, cure constipation, or simply heal the broken spirit. Unlike others who only pretended, she had the gift.
As she scraped pieces of root and bark, and gently picked the seeds from the plants she revered, she suddenly paused, aware of something different in the air around her—an unseen potent force. She stood up and, closing her eyes, listened quietly as she sniffed the air. There was an unfamiliar strangeness surrounding her. She felt the slight tremor of the earth and somewhere very far away, she heard the low-pitched hum.
It was a sound she knew well for it had been given to every civilization from the beginning of time. Used in all of the major religions—Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, Islam, Zoroastrianism and Christianity—it was the sacred universal sound. A single sustained note, a mantra, it was the melody of the angel that acted as the means of communication between the gods in the heavens and the humans on earth. It was the seraphim’s song.
But something was wrong; the single note was slightly off-key. The pitch wasn’t quite right. Then, because she was a choovihni and had the knowledge of the universe coursing through her veins, a cosmic consciousness that had been passed down to her from her mother, her grandmother, and her great grandmothers through all time, she sensed darkness and evil.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt One:
Soft classical music was playing. He’d had her listen to one of his favorite songs during an online get-together. He’d explained opera was his first love, and he wanted to share it with her. She hadn’t had the heart to tell him the wailing drove her to wish for earplugs. The whimper of the dog, Picasso, at the other end of the foyer redirected her musings. He paced by an open doorway three yards away. His tail hung between his legs.
“Are you okay?” A prickle of warning shot through her. She whistled to the dog. “Come.” Picasso stiffened.
That wasn’t good. “Arturo! Please, answer me.” She hadn’t locked up. Any four-or two-legged beast could enter. Maybe she should leave. As she turned, she spotted the foil-wrapped chocolates. The sweets trailed down the corridor and curved into the room by Picasso.
She smiled. Aha, Arturo was teasing her. Yesterday, he’d joked about a path of rose petals leading her to him. She’d told him she’d rather have candy.
“I get it, Romeo,” she said loudly. “Cute.” He might not think the nickname was so funny after she flung her accusations at him.
She followed the goodies to the dog and stopped on the threshold of a chamber to her right. The space was poorly lit by a lamp on a huge wooden desktop. The chair was pushed against the bookshelves. Nobody was there.
A sad melody floated to her. “Arturo?” She squinted into the shadows. Where was he?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Review: The writing was well-versed and poetic—almost Shakespearean. Story has a mildly captivating start that slowly eases the reader into a mysterious plot. The scene of Arturo and the intruder was kind of quick and choppy—practically a blur of emotions.
Tommie Murphy arrived at the site of 2 murders and was wanted for questioning.
Overall, the story had a nice and descriptive narrative, making it a fairly good read. The pace was rather slow and it’s kind of hard to figure out sometimes. There’s not a whole lot of focus on the mystery, which was a shame as this had the potential to being a good heart-stopping read. It was mildly amusing.

Sophie Washington: Treasure Beach
by Tonya Duncan Ellis
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Children's Middle Grade
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
A message in a bottle leads Sophie Washington and friends on a seaside treasure hunt in this exciting, illustrated chapter book adventure. It's summertime, and Sophie, her best friend, Chloe, and her younger brother, Cole are spending two fun-filled weeks in Corpus Christi, Texas with her young-at-heart grandmother. A surprise discovery on a day out at the beach takes them on a quest for riches. During their search, the kids snorkel, encounter endangered sea turtles, visit a World War II warship, and learn that honesty and true friendship are worth more than gold.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt One:
Building a sandcastle is like mixing a batch of cookies. You have to measure the ingredients precisely. Too much water, and it’ll be gooey. Too little, and the sand won’t stick together, and it will crumble.
My best friend Chloe and I have been working on ours all morning. We carefully pack our buckets with sand, make a sturdy base, and even carve in windows and shingles on the roof. It’s starting to remind me of Cinderella’s castle at Disney World.
“Back off, Cole!” I warn my little brother when he kicks sand in my face. He’s hopping around with Granny Washington’s metal detector, trying to find some treasures.
“I think I found something, Sophie!” He starts to shovel in the area where I was going to build a moat.
It’s the second day of our vacation at my grandmother’s house in Corpus Christi, Texas, and we’re spending it at the beach. Cole and I come here for a couple of weeks every summer, and this year, our parents let me bring my best friend Chloe along after I begged for days.
Mom and Dad are at home in Houston having own their vacation. When we FaceTimed them last night, they were on their way out for a date at a fancy restaurant.
Usually crowded by early afternoon, the beach is practically empty with just a few other people around. A cloudless, blue sky stretches over the ocean like a never-ending sheet. The sun shines so brightly that even the seagulls need shades.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Review: A beach vacation! Yay!
While Sophie was building a sand castle with her friend, her little brother was busy trying to find treasure with a metal detector. When the beeps start to sound, Cole finally thinks he found something. But could it turn into something more? It was a treasure hunt. Solve the 3 clues to find the treasure you seek. Sounded like a fun adventure for the kids this summer.
The best thing about it was that the kids got to witness and learn about sea life. It wasn’t just a treasure hunt; it was a journey through history.
Of course, history wasn’t the only thing Sophie learns about. She also learns a thing about honesty and friendship.
A fun beach read about sea life and morality.

One night stands only need apply.
Ali Stinson is having a bad day. Her afternoon tryst was interrupted (before they got to the good part) to discover her investment manager ran away with all her money. Now she has to keep up appearances with her high society friends, find a dress for an upcoming charity event, and not fall in love with Sam, the cute bartender, who insists on helping her. Thing is, she’s 90% sure she doesn’t want help. Adulting is hard.
Looking for work, not love.
Sam Freemont is having a strange day. He was in the middle of the best kiss of his life when his boss walked in and halted the fun, which is not helping with the low profile he’s trying to maintain. Now he can’t get Ali off his mind or out of his dreams. Good thing she’s a regular at the swanky resort he just started working at. Gives him time to find a way back to her lips. Or better yet, into her heart.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt One:
Sam sipped the cool juice and licked his lips. His mind filtered back to recent events in the cabana. The taste of the woman’s mouth on his, the sensation as he ran his hands over her silky-smooth skin, the way her body fit when crushed against his.
The moment he’d turned and noticed her sitting on the lounger, he’d been struck with a need to be with the bikini-clad woman. It had been like nothing he’d ever experienced before. He’d almost had to stop himself from throwing her over his shoulder and taking her back to his cave to have his way with her.
What had she done to him?
He gulped the rest of the chilled contents of the glass, attempting to extinguish the reignited fire. One glass wouldn’t do it. He refilled the cup then downed it as well. Poured a third glass. This woman had stirred up a permanent volcano under his skin.
It wasn’t like him to walk away from his responsibilities for the promise of sex, but one look from her and all reason had flown out the window. He couldn’t quite believe what had happened. If his boss hadn’t interrupted them, sex was where they were headed. He was sure of that.
What got him the most was when she’d smiled at him. A beautiful smile. One capable of stopping an elephant in its tracks. Yet, behind the expression, he’d sensed sadness. No, desolation. His longing intensified, shifting to an immediate need to protect her, to do whatever he could to make her better. Even if it involved nothing more than holding her hand.
