Helena is 40 and desperate, so she sinks herself to ordering a man from the dating service network. They seem perfect for each other, but the problem is he can’t give her what she wants: marriage and kids. Can they make it work? Or were they doomed from the start?

Blog Tour: SHINING BRIGHTLY by Howard Brown

SHINING BRIGHTLY

by Howard Brown

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE
:  Memoir
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

In Shining Brightly, Silicon Valley pioneer, cancer survivor and interfaith peacemaker Howard Brown shares keys to resilience for successful entrepreneurs, patient advocates and community leaders. He shows us how to reach out through our families, our communities and around the world to form truly supportive connections and friendships. From Howard’s career as a Silicon Valley entrepreneur, to his conquering metastatic stage IV cancer twice, to his compassionate outreach as a peacemaker, to his love of sports—this ultimately is not one man’s story. Shining Brightly is a story shared by countless men and women—and may wind up changing your life as well. With each true story he tells in the pages, Howard invites readers to picture how they might join him in shining more light in our world.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt One:
Sprinkled through all the adventures in this book—some of them ordinary, heartwarming family stories and some of them so remarkable you will be tempted to call them miraculous—there are truths like this one Bubby Bertha was trying to explain that morning on the sidewalk in Worcester, Massachusetts. There are more to come, but here are four of these truths as we set out on our journey together in these pages:
• Each of us has our own special light.
• We shine more brightly when we share our light with others.
• True resiliency—the kind that is strong enough to overcome trauma at seemingly impossible odds—      rests on letting in the light of others.
• As our light circles the world, we illuminate and celebrate our diversity.
I’m sharing these truths right away so that perhaps you’ll turn down the corner of this page and flip back to it from time to time. This is your book as much as it is mine, after all, and I wrote it with the intention that you will mark it up and return to its pages occasionally for inspiration. Plus, as you read through these chapters, you’ll find lots of ideas for fun and inspiring things you can do to shine your light in the world.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

 GUEST POST

*Topic: what would you like readers to get out of your book?

We can share hope with others.

It’s a powerful pillar in my life. In other words: Hope is not merely one person’s dream in isolation. From the very beginning of human life on earth, hope has been a currency we can give and receive.

At our best, we can do this every day in many ways.

For three decades, people have been talking about Gary Chapman’s The Five Love Languages. What Chapman did in his mega-bestseller was name five kinds of currency people use to share love: giving gifts, words of affirmation, quality time, acts of service and physical touch. The value of his wisdom is obvious in the more than 10 million copies of his book that have sold worldwide.

Now, we need to learn that hope also is a currency and it takes as many forms as love. Just as Gary Chapman did not invent the idea of sharing love in various forms, I did not make up the idea that we can share hope in many ways.

What I have tried to illustrate through my own life story is that, when we shine brightly, we can give many forms of hope to others. Chapman had his five labels: gifts, affirmations, time, service and touch as forms of love. We can learn a lot about sharing hope by starting with that list. For example, during both of my life-and-death struggles with cancer, I experienced the power of physical touch to revive my hopes. Effective cancer treatment depends on the compassionate physical care of countless doctors, nurses, technicians, aides, caregivers and loved ones.

Sharing hope can be an easy, everyday part of life.

Throughout this book, I have shared dozens of inspirational stories from Silicon Valley to Eastern Europe, from family vacations to bedside vigils in hospitals, from births to burials. I have tried to offer a wide range of invitations to readers. Maybe you are inspired by neighborhood stories like those with Papa Leo and Imelda? Maybe you were inspired by the religious connections I have made throughout my life? Maybe you take heart from my stories of beating impossible odds against cancer? Or maybe you are moved by questions like the ones my daughter, Emily, poses to young campers she supervises in the wilderness: If today was the last day of your life, what legacy would you leave behind?

What I realize, as I complete the two years of research, interviews and writing that went into this memoir, is that as a little boy my Bubby Bertha taught me a deeper truth than I was able to fully appreciate at the time. Yes, found money is God’s money—but that means far more than the destination of an occasional coin we find along the way. It means that this world was given to us—to all of us—by God so that we could share it and share of ourselves.

This isn’t my world.

It isn’t your world.

It has always been God’s world, given to us to enjoy for the little span of years we are given.

Learning to share this world—and to share the hopeful message that peace is possible—is not a matter of personal preference. It’s not a choice. It’s not a hobby. It’s our purpose here as we walk the earth. Tikkun olam, the Jewish calling to repair the world, is our name for a collective mission we all share. And, while it may sound like a burden, that call to spread love and hope turns out to be the key to our happiness.

Without hope, there is no happiness.

And there is no hope if we are isolated, if we are excluded, if we pull away from our neighbors.

Hope is never mine.

Hope must be ours.

I guarantee that if you shine your light on the people you meet—you will find hope glowing all around you.

It’s true. Shining brightly makes the world a better place.

Katelyn Prendergast grew up in the Alberta prairies where she spent the majority of her time at the family lake cabin, which inspired her creative side for crafting, painting, and her great passion for writing. She still lives in the prairies with her husband and two spirited young daughters, where she is as comfortable bingeing a great show as she is spending the day outside with her family. As it is, the only thing that could rival her love of family is a mug of hot chocolate on a frigid Canadian night. Her first book, Family Fun at the Lake, reflects the simplicity of her life as a child and mirrors those feelings in watching her own children grow up.

Blog Tour: BEGINNING OF ARROGANCE by Bryan Cole

Beginning of Arrogance

by Bryan Cole

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE
:   Fantasy
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Paladins are nothing but trouble. Stories about paladins are everywhere, noble warriors riding magic steeds into battle against terrible foes. Champions of their gods. Heroes to everyone, except those who already have everything. Paladins are notorious for upsetting the balance of power, to the detriment of any who don't worship their deity.

So when Krell is called to service by the capricious god of the seas and skies, ReckNor, those with wealth and power can't help but be concerned. ReckNor hasn't called a paladin in years, and his nature is ever-changing and erratic. The fact that Krell is also an uneducated nobody with a stubborn streak as wide as the sea turns their concerns into fear.

All of which matters less than the threat clawing its way from the waves, ready to turn the ocean red with spilled blood...

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt One:
Krell’s sword struck the pell.
His heavy breathing couldn’t disguise the dull thunk from the blade as it hit, bits of wood breaking off. Krell twisted his wrist and pulled, disengaging the blade. He struck again, the blade sliding along the wood, leaving a fresh scar. Once again, he failed to cut through the post.
Krell recovered his stance, his shield raised as Olgar taught him while his sword moved back into proper striking position. His next strike was high and carved another sliver of wood. Without waiting, Krell swung again. The sword hit lower than Krell wanted. He pulled back into the proper stance, and his next strike was on target, carving deep into the wood.
“All right, lad, I think we’ve seen enough,” a voice said from somewhere ahead of him.
Krell took a step back from the pell. An unsteady step, he was forced to admit. The sun was still high in the sky. Sweat ran into his blue eyes, causing him to blink in irritation. He glared at the wooden post. No more than halfway through. His chain mail armor was heavy on his shoulders.
He looked over at the town council, seated at a long table under an awning. They had comfortable chairs for the most part, and were sipping on what looked like cool drinks in the shade. Krell wondered how much attention they were actually paying to this test.
Amra Thort was the leader of the town council, and owner of one of the largest fishing fleets in Watford. She was a formidable- looking woman with steel gray hair, whose hands bore the signs of hard work done many years ago. People in the town respected her, Olgar had told him.
Seated next to her was Daylan Plintform, a wealthy merchant who owned many trading and fishing vessels. His long face was handsome, but he always looked irritated, even when he wasn’t. Olgar detested him, but refused to explain why. He was popular in town, since he paid for numerous festivals and banquets when the catch was good.
The Lost and Found of Green Tree
by Bobbie Candas
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

GENRE
: historical fiction

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Both heart-warming and gut-wrenching, the merging stories of Mariah and Nanette reveal their grit and determination as they attempt to carve out a better life for themselves during one the twentieth century’s most arduous decades.
Growing up in the rural village of Green Tree, Nanette is convinced she’s meant for a bigger life, perhaps in the spotlight of Hollywood. But selling popcorn in a Minnesota movie theater is a far cry from the glamor she dreams of; nevertheless, Nanette is undaunted by challenges.
Mariah, living just outside of Green Tree, yearns to move off the family farm and take on a modern job in a bustling city, but she’s sidetracked by love. By eighteen, she finds herself married to her high school sweetheart, giving birth to twin daughters, and living only a few miles from the home she grew up in.
As the economy worsens during the Great Depression, Nanette’s and Mariah’s lofty goals are forced to change as early tragedies confront both women. Brought together by a mutual friend, Nanette extends a generous offer to Mariah, but in time she exacts a frightening price.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT

Nanette:

The doctor said, “You’re young, appear to be healthy and strong. You should fully recover, but I need to tell you—something unexpected but unavoidable.”

This didn’t sound good.

“I had to perform a vaginal hysterectomy. It was the only way to clear the remains and infection. Unfortunately, with ovaries removed, you’ll not be able to conceive. I’m sorry to tell you so bluntly, but the hysterectomy is a big part of why you feel so much pain and weakness.”

“Oh my God.” Even through my exhaustion, I felt a quickening panic. “Doctor, back up. When you say never conceive, are you sure? Maybe after a few years… a pregnancy might be possible? I’m only nineteen.”

“No, I’m sorry. After a hysterectomy, it’s simply not possible. These are difficult surgeries. We were in a fight for your life. You’re truly lucky to still be here. Take comfort in that, Miss Jorgenson.”

“Yes, a lucky girl.” I turned my face into the pillow and began to cry, not wanting to prolong the conversation.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt One:
Just two boats were left now, one already sidled up to the side of the ship, guests boarding one by one. Another waited about fifty feet away, giving the ship wide berth.
A woman with long blonde hair and a tight-fitting black cocktail waited anxiously with the others.
A few moments ago, she had noticed a drop in temperature, a few darker clouds and a rumbling in the distance.
There was a storm coming.
She moved closer to the man who was standing beside her. His cell phone had been taken from him at some point, as had hers. So, they both had little to do but stand and wait. Talking about what had just happened might give them away. And they were so close.
The last passenger boarded the boat in front of them. She was an older woman with white hair that was slicked back against her skull. The last lights from the yacht reflected on her sequined gown, the sparkles glimmering in the dark. Sydney watched her as if hypnotized.
After she had landed clumsily in her seat, the boat pulled away, and the last idling boat took its place. Sydney gripped the hand of the broad shouldered man next to her. Despite his size, his grip was weak.
They exchanged a quick look. His eyes were clouded, but she could see the relief softening his features.
Almost there.
As they moved forward to board, she noticed the sudden silence in the air. The fire alarm had stopped. A jolt of fear ripped through her stomach.
They must have put out the fire down below. Sydney looked around wildly.
Will the evacuation stop?
She pulled his hand towards the idling boat. They would be the first to board. The crew member on the boat gave her companion an odd look when he noticed his bloodied, swollen face.
“He fell on the steps,” she said, trying to assuage his alarm. The man simply nodded and gestured for him to move forward. The waves had gained strength in the last few minutes and the ropes from the boat stretched to their full length. The crew struggled to keep the smaller boat under control.
Another rope was tethered to the cleat alongside the massive yacht. A crew member reached for Sydney’s hand.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Review: Sydney Evans was just looking for a little peace and quiet, especially after what she went through last year. The last thing she wanted was another visit from the FBI with the news that her boyfriend, an agent for them, was missing in Costa Rica.

The narrative was rather engaging; however, it draws too much attention into the setting and the emotional state, which can dull the anticipating and impede the progression. Although it had an interesting premise, at times, the plot can be hard to follow because there’s so much strenuous detail that doesn’t really fulfill the story.

Overall, story was not as exciting as I expected, but it was a good, solid effort by the author in adult suspense, although, to be perfectly honest, she should really stick to middle grade adventure.

A fairly nice read.

Blog Tour: OLD BAG OF TRICKS by Kevin J. Cyr

Old Bag of Tricks

by Kevin J. Cyr

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE
:   Horror Comic
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Most people think Halloween should be called a holiday, but for some it could be a reminder of a tragedy. On that night, the lives of three boys changed forever. Making the decision to go to that one last house proved to be a terrible mistake. Her appearance seems weak and frail, but she's nobody's granny—not by a long shot! Psychotic and delusional from lack of taking her much-needed medication, she finally gives closure to that town's past with their missing children. Being a victim of rape as a young girl, living in a very abusive family home, and learning of her pregnancy were things that she could never make peace with and put behind her. Living as a hermit with her son and never seeing the light of day, she slowly slips into insanity. Those three boys never saw her coming. Who would ever suspect that this sweet old lady was a serial killer? Strong as a ox and limber as a cat, she has plenty of tricks up her sleeve. Enticing the kids inside with all her candy and spiked homemade cupcakes was easy. Out of these three boys, only one makes it out alive to tell the tale.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt Two:
Introduction
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Review: A terrible tragedy has been happening on Halloween night. Murders of children.  Apparently, it was something in the candy they ate. Could the old, witchy woman be more sinister than she looked?

When 3 boys visit the old lady’s house on a stormy Halloween night, they don’t come back out. At least, that was the old lady’s plan. But why would this old lady do this you ask? You’d have to go back 50 years to that horrible night she was beaten, raped, and left for dead. She knew one day she’d get her revenge. Oooh, I like her thinking.

OMG, I love graphic novels! And this one doesn’t disappoint, even though I’m not really a fan of this particular genre. The art is very vivid, sketchy, and colorful, although the images can be very bloody and gruesome. I have to admit that this was much gorier than I had expected or wanted. This was like watching a typical slasher film—all you see is blood, blood, and more blood. Of course, blood and bloody death are all you expect to see in a slasher film, which is fine, but you also want to see some story, too, which this comic didn’t really have too much of. There’s some story in the beginning when you hear about the old lady’s past, but towards the end, the art panels are just drenched in blood.  Quite frankly, there was too much blood for my taste. There’s violence, strong language, and brief nudity, so it’s definitely more suited for adults and older teens. Definitely had good art work. I especially loved how the images evoked tension, fear, and horror. What a scary, old lady! She was a strong and feisty one. She’s nobody’s granny alright.

This story will make you scared of little, old ladies. So sick and twisted. Be aware that it might make readers sick. A good horror comic that readers will especially enjoy if they love slasher films.

Rating: 4 stars

Review: STUNG IN LITTLE LEAF CREEK by Cindy Bell

It’s springtime! And what goes with spring? Gardening, of course! And the library was offering a garden club, but all goes down the drain when a librarian drops dead.

Death by a bee sting. Actually, it was a lot of bee stings and the guy was allergic. But why did so many bees sting him at once? And what were the bees doing inside in the first place? Sounds like a job for Cassie and Tessa.

Was it the organic farmer with bee hives? A wife that may have been cheating? Who else had access to bees?

This all boiled down to an interesting mystery!

Review: SCANDAL IN LITTLE LEAF CREEK by Cindy Bell

What’s a town picnic without a little murder?

Things seem to going all fun and well until the dead body of the town gossip was discovered. Was her latest article a source of scandal and a good reason for murder? It would seem that the person of interest was “untouchable.” Anyone that gets involved in the investigation would become a target. Could this be too dangerous for Cassie and Tessa?

Things get more interesting when the cops suspect Cassie’s former in-law. The more reason for Cassie to find the real killer. The duo uncovers one scandal after another along with a long list of suspects.

An interesting mystery too good to put down!

Review: MURDER ON WOOF WAY by Cindy Bell

The townspeople weren’t too thrilled about the convict working at the local café. But was that any reason to kill him?

Sounds like another case for Nikki, the dog-walker.

With an ex-con, the list of suspects was endless.

The progress was rather slow in the storyline. It gets a little more interesting when Nikki finds the murder weapon and gets arrested by the FBI. Also, it gets better as more suspects come into play.

This was a pretty good mystery, but not the greatest.
