Review: DIFFERENT WITH YOU by E.H. Lyon
A vet and a doctor—both divorced, both moved back to town, and both still with a lingering attraction to one another. The two knew each other as teenager and once kissed. Now, they’re more experienced and wiser, but they still feel giddy as teenagers with each other.
I liked the comradery—the friendliness, the shy looks, the awkward tenderness. Nice that they both wanted to go slow as they re-enter the dating scene after their divorces. But how long can they really wait?
The two are constantly running into each other and are thrown together a lot. It gets tiring after a while. About 30% in, you want something different to happen besides the looks, the talks, and the flirty banter. Story was slow all the way.
It’s a fairly nice read, but I just wish it was better and quicker.

Review: NOT SO BROKEN by Renee Regent
A billionaire, heir to a resort empire, was hiding out in the seclusion of the GA mountains. Ever since the death of his wife and unborn child, he kept away, forgetting the man he used to be. Sacha is a lonely divorcee who wants to forget her failed marriage by climbing the corporate ladder.
The diary-style narrative is nice, but ordinary and unamusing. Rather long and slow. Just wasn’t interesting.

What’s worse than losing a body from a funeral home? Losing two. But mortician and amatuer sleuth, Lily Reynolds has a hunch. The new visitor in town, Rick Drakon, may have charmed his way into her life but she’s not fooled by his smooth talking ways. Problem is, Rick is a long-time friend of Lily’s new husband, Detective James Rivers. While James is busy convincing her to look elsewhere, Lily embarks on a dangerous path toward uncovering the truth. Will this case come between the couple or will Lily find herself closer to evil than ever before?

Black River reminded James of one thing: murder.
Hidden in dense foliage, the river stretched out far beyond his view and also happened to be a perfect spot to dump a body. He had no doubt there had been many missing people over the years who wound up weighed down by rocks at the bottom of the river until their flesh disintegrated into nothing.
His boss, Donald Abrams had a bad habit of telling him about their worst cases, probably to freak him out. The sicko with the garden of people floating upright like weeds was particularly gruesome. The chills he got from that one made the hairs on his neck stand up. However, since Manorview’s crime rate was low, James wasn’t entirely sure if the stories were folklore or not.
“Congrats on your last case. I heard you’re a big boss detective now,” Rick said as he reeled in his empty line.
James impaled a worm on his hook and swung the line out into the water. “Thanks. I wouldn’t say big boss though. More like maybe I’ll get to keep my job.”
“Have you ever caught anything here?” Rick asked.
“No, but I hear there’s trout.”
And bodies.
Review: Who’d steal a body from a funeral home? For Lily, the owner and amateur sleuth, a missing body certainly didn’t bode well and it certainly was bad for business. Was it possible that somebody wanted to take revenge on a dead body? Lily hoped so, otherwise, she’d be closing her doors fairly soon. And the case soon gets double pressed when a 2ndbody goes missing. What was going on?
The last person Lily wanted to suspect was her husband’s best friend, who was staying with them. But why would he steal dead bodies? Could this be the work of a cult leader—recruiting followers and making sacrifices?
Meanwhile, more and more bodies were disappearing. Will Lily be able to catch the body snatcher?
Story had a captivating narrative with witty and hearty banter. The premise keeps you vested the whole way with the exception of the mild and anticlimactic ending.
An enjoyable mystery caper!

On the night of a blue moon, while walking his dog, middle-aged widower Jim sees Gladys on the roof of a neighboring apartment building and is inspired to speak with her. There’s just one problem: she can’t hear him.
Indeed, Jim isn’t even sure that Gladys truly exists—that she isn’t just a rooftop patio umbrella silhouetted against the moon. Hampered by debilitating social anxiety, he cannot work up the courage to even wave.
Yet Jim returns to the same spot night after night, and Gladys—who is indeed real—sees him and becomes equally interested. She even contributes to their “conversation,” though he cannot hear her either. And while Gladys struggles with her own demons—self-loathing and depression—she is lifted by Jim’s attention, even as she describes how difficult her life has been.
Two characters, driven by sadness and a longing to connect. Will they?

God, it’s getting cold and miserable out here. Walk Bowser, John, so I can leave my post and get warm. I’m going to stay very still until you leave. Maybe you’ll forget that I’m a real person. Blog Tour: BINARY LOGIC by Tracy Ross
Binary Logic
by Tracy Ross
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Horror, Science Fiction, Fantasy
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Binary Logic is the perfect merge of content and form—exploring concepts of literary genre with revelatory narrative. It is a collection of tales touching on relational dysfunction, the conflicts inherent in addiction and fear, and the legacy of female future time lords. The stories all create a bridge between the reckoning imagination and the spirit of free will and self-made destiny. Binary Logic quietly asks the question, “Where is the mind of our species headed and what is the next quantum leap of human consciousness?”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt One:
It was then that I realized I was in it for the both of us. My father and I against the anguish. At one point, during the early hours of morning, the crying faces had all gotten loose and were crawling up the walls and dropping from the ceiling like smokey apparitions from Dante’s Inferno, liquid shadows of creeping hunger, an infestation of screaming mouths and terror-stricken eyes, the reality of the walls closing in on me like a wriggling, dark prison. In my panic and shock, I finally blacked out, leaving the room for the numbing promise of sleep. I welcomed unconscious bliss.
Note to self: pain is a manifestation. It lives like a beast, a breathing, hungry creature, unable to free itself from destiny, unable to make the choice to release itself because it is comfortable in its tragedy. It is easier to go on in pain, then to go through to the other side where there is peace. The fear stops you. It prevents you from going all the way.
Topic: Please describe some of your best writing habits
I have found that if you place either your computer or your writing notebook by the nightstand, you have a tendency to wake up and go straight for it. This has helped me to start my day with a focused mind on what I am writing and to really carry through with my creative output from the night before. I find inspiration immediately upon starting my morning so that I can really establish a structured day early on.
The most important thing one can do in trying to write well and keep writing is to make the space your own by placing your objects around you that matter, reminding you of your vision and imagination. If there is too much space between you and the typewriter, you think too much and even while walking across the room to type your words on the page, you are already making excuses and the mind wanders.
Keep the space invaded with the tools of the trade—computer, typewriter, word-processor, pen, ink and paper, journal, and a cup of coffee or tea. Plenty of light and an imagination is all you need to really delve into the potentials of writing well and writing often.
Music also is a God send in keeping the mind awake and focused and pausing when it needs to in order to re-group or take a break.
GENRE: Dystopian/Western Romance
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Three years wandering the desert is enough to drive anyone insane, and the limits of Bonnie and Jesse’s minds and hearts will be put to the ultimate test.
A deadly showdown with a murderous outlaw ripped Bonnie away from the relative peace and ragtag family she’d built at the end of Guns & Smoke. In the thrilling next chapter in The Fool’s Adventure series, we finally get the answer to the biggest question: What happened to Bonnie?
After three years of fighting to get her back, literally, Jesse James finds her in the most unlikely of places-- New Orleans high society. With the help of his rival-turned-friend Will Ellis, and a sassy staff member, Jesse’s tasked with infiltrating the house of the man he believes was responsible for killing his parents in order to get her back. Jesse’s biggest challenge yet will be learning to fight for Bonnie in a way he never expected before: by fitting in.
Mired in high society politics and scheming, Bonnie is at the epicenter of one of the most ruthless gangs in the world. Years trapped in a gilded cage of wealth and lies has irrevocably changed her from a crass outlaw into a southern debutante. Gone is the dangerous glint in her eyes, replaced with suspicion when the devilishly handsome street fighter named Montana suddenly joins her father’s staff.
Can Jesse remind Bonnie of who she really is in time to keep her from giving her heart and hand away or will he discover that the wild, beautiful outlaw he fell in love with is truly gone?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt One:
Staring at her now, knowing that I’d desperately fallen for her all over again sent a stark jolt through me. This feeling between us wasn’t some average infatuation. Most people could live a lifetime and never experience the raging, all-consuming need to be close to another person, no matter whether you knew why.
My soul called out, and hers answered.
Everything that I’d lost three years ago was suddenly before me. In the span of a breath, I closed the distance. I clutched her hips, a smile curling over my lips at the little gasp she let out as her back met the steel door and my mouth covered hers. I reached behind her, flicking the lock. Too many times we’d been interrupted. I’d be damned if I let it happen now. Not when she loved me again.
Topic: What's the best way to engage a reader right away?
Abbie: The best way to engage a reader from the start is to have a good hook. An author has to have an intriguing first sentence, something that establishes the stakes and makes a reader root for the main character. I've always found that starting with some sort of action really helps to pull a reader in. Weaving action with snippets of backstory and why a reader should care about the character are some of the best ways to hook a reader and get them invested from the start.
Lauren: I had the pleasure of meeting Marilyn R. Atlas years ago, she's a film producer as well as a talent and literary manager. She also happens to be one of the funniest and most impressive women I've had the pleasure of working with. She gave me some advice a long time ago that really stuck with me.
"Get to the point and get there fast."
Seems simple enough, but for writers it's incredibly hard to condense your work that way. She was talking about writing loglines at the time, but I find myself leaning on that advice so often in the course of my writing. And first sentences and pages are no exception to this.
Summing up a character's immediate conflict with a strong voice that depicts who they are is hard. But everytime I'm able to "get to the point fast" it seems I'm really able to tap into who they are and why readers should care about them. It's not a perfect answer, but it's what works for me.
by Patrick Jones
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Young adult fiction
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Johanna and Paul have a passionate, yet volatile relationship. Shy Johanna knows no amount of passion can wipe out the verbal, emotional, and physical abuse. She finds the courage to walk away to have her own future.
Bret is a social outcast, but an intense relationship with Kylee makes him believe that dreams can come true. Bret's world crashes down when Kylee cheats with one of Bret's friends leading to a disastrous prom night confrontation.
Bret and Johanna, home from their first year of college, meet and find an instant attraction. Their chemistry is undeniable, but shadows from the past threaten the present when Paul re-enter Johanna's life and Bret's home life turns upside down. Can two broken-hearted people break the grip of the past and find happiness?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt One:
“Johanna, it’s Paul.”
I earned an A in AP Physics as a high school senior, so I know time can’t stand still, but hearing Paul’s voice again makes me question that. It makes me question everything.
“Johanna, it’s Paul,” he repeats.”
This is the phone call I’ve been dreading; this is the call I’ve been craving. In an instant, I am thrust from a successful, first-year Columbia University student back to my insecure Pontiac, Michigan, high school self. All it took was this voice from my past.
“Hello. You remember me, right?” he says, then laughs. It is a sound I have missed.
I know his laugh is quicksand, but I can’t resist.
“Paul, of course I remember you. I’m just surprised to hear from you, that’s all.”
“It’s been a while, Joha, hasn’t it?” I tingle at the use of his nickname for me.
“Yes, you could say that,” I say, instead of the real answer, which is, ‘No, Paul it’s not been a while. It’s been over two years since we talked.’ Other than visiting me at my high school graduation open house, mainly to show off his new girlfriend, Sarah, Paul had been out of my life. No calls, no texts, no messages. The past was in the past, but now things had changed.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Review: For Johanna, as far as Paul was concerned, “there is knowing and there is knowing better.” Her relationship with Paul was both beautiful and ugly, so when he calls out of the blue asking her for a favor, she was stumped. With all the lies, alcohol, beatings, and disappointments he put her through, she really should’ve have given even one minute of her time.
Brett was also a guy that’s been burned and kicked by love. Two awkward, nerdy souls that can’t let go of the past. Brett was reluctant to let another girl break his heart and Johanna couldn’t get rid of her addiction to Paul, who continues to use and abuse her.
Nonetheless, the two take a chance on each other and the chemistry between them is evident. Told in the POV of both Johanna and Brett, their stories relay the bitter realities and harsh struggles in dealing with overbearing parents, so-called friends, lousy jobs, self-esteem battles, and trust issues. The narrative was simply engaging with a clever wit and a touch of poetry.
Resentment and regret are 2 emotions these characters knew all too well. Would that keep these 2 from each other? Brett and Johanna seemed to be the light in each other’s dark world. I thought they were pretty good for each other. But, alas, first loves can never be forgotten, and, unfortunately, they continue to taint their lives. Can they give themselves to each other while still chained to others?
“There’s something between us, even it’s only a beaten-up past and a sealed-off future.”
“Your past is something you take with you every step you take, but you can’t let it control your path.”
The emotional toll and baggage of these characters were just so raw and unrelenting. Filled with heart and heartache, this is a trying love story.
Nice read about growing, learning from your mistakes, and finally letting go. It’s a good one!
GENRE: Spirituality
BLURB:
A spirit guide.
Love is the answer.
Love is the be-all.
Don't be afraid.
I am here to help you.
These are a few of the words I had written down the morning after a trusted medium told me to buy a notebook and write down the very first thing that came to me. Okay, but these didn't sound like things I would say. Was it really my spirit guide? I had doubts, and those doubts would stay with me over the next several months as I continued this daily ritual.
Eventually, I accepted the fact that this was spirit communication. This was a guide, and there would be two more to follow in the coming years. This has now become a daily routine after my morning meditation: sitting and writing what comes through me. It is indeed a deep communication with a close friend and confidant.
In the course of all of this, there would be so much more. How I improved and strengthened my mediumship abilities, how the Universe opened to me in so many ways, and how my personal life changed for the better. Do you think this is something you would be interested in trying? If I can do it, so can you. Follow my progress from my initial misgivings to my introduction to a whole new world.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt One:
Spirit, mostly in the form of my guides, was there to move me forward, or maybe I should say upward, to raise my vibration.
These guides worked with me on a daily basis, helping me to improve my sensitivity to spirit, reinforcing me when my doubts crept in (which was often), reminding me to watch my diet which wasn’t always the most healthful, showing me where my mediumship abilities lay, and so very much more. They became a part of my life. It was like communicating with a best friend.
