Annette Spratte has lived several lives: as a child in Germany, as an au-pair in Pennsylvania, as a legal secretary and as a horse trainer back again in Germany. Now she is a wife, a mother of two energetic boys, a part-time accountant, a missionary for horse lovers and a devoted gardener. She lives in a village close to Altenkirchen in the beautiful Westerwald region in Germany. She hates shopping.
None of this ever kept her from reading. And all of this has somehow to do with the story she wrote although she never planned on doing that.

What Josie has gone through is in no way autobiographical. The trauma she suffered (if you want to learn more about that, you'll have to read the next book) is purely fictional. But her emotional state as described in Survivor is something familiar to me, without the nightmares. My home was not a happy one, my relationship to my father very distant while my mother was emotionally abusive.
Parts of me and my experience are scattered all over my characters. So I cannot say Josie represents me or - in the follow-up - Jim or Stacey or Lisa represents me. They all do and yet they are all their own personalities, acting in ways I never would.
Glad it touched you!(less)
Annette Spratte I am currently working on a historical romance with a touch of mystery. I really didn't want to write that, but it wouldn't leave me alone!

Book Review

Unrelenting (World War II #1)Unrelenting by Marion Kummerow

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Set in pre World War II Germany, this unusual love story is bound to fascinate, especially with the knowledge that it is based on real life experiences by the author's grandparents.
Meet Wilhelm Quedlin, Q for short, who has only one love in life: science. He is an inventor, works on gas masks and echo sound systems and would happily have con... Read more of this blog post »

"This is the first book I’ve read from Helen, but I know that from now on I will read more from her. The Lost Girls is a page-turner. I read 20 chapters of it in one day, because simply I couldn’t put it down. I feared more than once for Jane’s and..." Read more of this review »

“I acknowledged that God is the sovereign Lord and I gave myself up completely. I guess it’s a little bit like committing suicide, only with a higher purpose.”
Annette Spratte, The Way of Life

“Deserves it! I daresay he does. Many that live deserve death. And some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them? Then do not be too eager to deal out death in judgement. For even the very wise cannot see all ends.”
J.R.R. Tolkien, The Fellowship of the Ring

“It is difficult to be sat on all day, every day, by some other creature, without forming an opinion on them.

On the other hand, it is perfectly possible to sit all day, every day, on top of another creature and not have the slightest thought about them whatsoever.”
Douglas Adams, Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency

“Now it is such a bizarrely improbable coincidence that anything so mind-bogglingly useful could have evolved purely by chance that some thinkers have chosen to see it as the final and clinching proof of the non-existence of God.
The argument goes something like this: "I refuse to prove that I exist,'" says God, "for proof denies faith, and without faith I am nothing."
"But," says Man, "The Babel fish is a dead giveaway, isn't it? It could not have evolved by chance. It proves you exist, and so therefore, by your own arguments, you don't. QED."
"Oh dear," says God, "I hadn't thought of that," and promptly vanishes in a puff of logic.
"Oh, that was easy," says Man, and for an encore goes on to prove that black is white and gets himself killed on the next zebra crossing.”
Douglas Adams, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy

“An en is a karmic bond lasting a lifetime. Nowadays many people seem to believe their lives are entirely a matter of choice; but in my day we viewed ourselves as pieces of clay that forever show the fingerprints of everyone who has touched them.”
Arthur Golden, Memoirs of a Geisha

“Friendship ... is born at the moment when one man says to another "What! You too? I thought that no one but myself . . .”
C.S. Lewis, The Four Loves
