Lawrence M. Schoen holds a Ph.D. in cognitive psychology, is a past Astounding, Hugo, and Nebula, nominee, twice won the Cóyotl award for best novel, founded the Klingon Language Institute, and occasionally does work as a hypnotherapist specializing in authors’ issues. He is a chimeric cancer survivor.

His science fiction includes many light and humorous adventures of a space-faring stage hypnotist and his alien animal companion. Other works take a very different tone, exploring aspects of determinism and free will, generally redefining the continua between life and death. Sometimes he blurs the funny and the serious. Lawrence lives near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania with his wife and their dog.

Hey, Alex,

I always intended this portion of the series to be a trilogy, and I have a third book outlined. Unfortunately, my publisher has expressed no interest in paying me to write that book.

The current plan is that in the second half of 2019 I will run a Kickstarter to fund the next book in the series, with an eye toward publishing it in early 2020.(less)

Hi, Abby, thanks for the question.

The answer depends somewhat on the book. The BARSK books are intended for adults, but that's mainly because they deal with some weighty philosophical ideas (discrimination, death, free will). My AMAZING CONROY series, or more recently the ADRENALINE RUSH series (co-authored with Brian Thorne) have a lighter tone and are less "thinky".

I don't believe any of my books have any overt or explicit sex scenes (I'm more of a "fade to black" writer). I think everything is appropriate for an intelligent adolescent and on up.

The one exception is my collection of poems, CREATURE ACADEMY which is very much aimed at younger readers.(less)

“Put down the buffalo dog and step away from the bar!”

That simple sentence set in motion a universe. And not just any universe, no, the Conroyverse!

The Conroyverse is a sampler containing the short story that started the entire fictional universe as well as the first novels from each of the three series that share that common, alien-rich setting. It’s a taste — appropriate given the emphasis o

I am currently working on Miranda's book, tentatively titled NOBODY TOLD ME YOU COULD BREAK THE MOON. I don't know when it will be finished, or published, but sometime...and I certainly intend to write Shar's book too, tentatively titled SO GREAT, NO See James’s answer.

My ancestry is something of a mystery. The origins of the Cambias surname have proved difficult to track down. Perhaps investigating too deeply would uncover secrets that someone is still willing to kill to conceal . . .

“Magic is the deliberate manipulation of coincidence.”
Lawrence M. Schoen

“There were times when Pizlo knew he thought too much, and other times when he thought he knew too much. This time was neither of those.”
Lawrence M. Schoen, The Moons of Barsk

“There's really only one choice you ever have to make in any act of creation. Will you be the instrument or the artist? If you're only now coming to realize that you've been a tool all your life, there's no one to blame for it but yourself. If you don't like that state of affairs, then act! Impose your will upon the world and walk your own path. If you don't, you'll just end up being a token in someone else's game; you'll continue to be used as they see fit. That's how the universe works. You don't have to like it, but you'd do well to get used to it.”
Lawrence M. Schoen, Barsk: The Elephants' Graveyard
