Mark grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio, but has lived all over the world, including a brief stint in Perth, Australia as a child.

Mark’s passion for writing began in junior high. Encouraged by his teachers, including now best-selling author Sharon Draper, his eighth grade English teacher, he wrote short stories, dystopian poetry, and even attempted a novel heavily inspired by The Hobbit.

After high school, Mark served in the US Navy, working on the flight deck of the USS Peleliu fueling helicopters. When his enlistment was up, Mark enrolled in the Electrical Engineering program at the University of Cincinnati, but bailed out his sophomore year to start working as a freelance computer software developer. Today he continues to write code as well as f

As far as writer's block on a particular project, I just work through it. Sometimes the result is the wrong thing, but that's okay. I'll fix it later. I generally know the direction I'm headed, so it's just about finding the right path from point A to point B. Sometimes I hit a dead end, so I back up to see if I went the wrong way. Other times, I discover I wasn't going to the right place in the first place.

The most interesting thing is when I think I'm going to point B but end up at point Q. And Q is almost always more interesting than where I thought I wanted to go.

So basically, if I get lost, I'll stop and try to look at the big picture to see if I'm on the right path or not, then get back to work.(less)

The Militiaman of Garthset by Mark Dame
"I haven’t read the other books set in this world, but it didn’t stop me from enjoying this stand-alone novella. The author has created a believable world and strong characters. It’s pacy but has enough depth to get you hooked. Recommended."
The Militiaman of Garthset by Mark Dame
"This novella is a little bit slow in getting stated but once it does it races forward at breakneck pace until the final pages. In concept, it is a rather simple coming of age tale in which a young man who lost his parents to orcs has to deal with..." Read more of this review »
