I know this isn't a very popular answer and some would be offended but I would have to say - no. A lot of people think that anyone can write and I suppose that's true, but that doesn't mean it would be good or that you're meant to write. I used to want to be a doctor or a nurse, but as I got older I realized I was too empathetic and unable to cope with such a job. Writing is exactly the same, you can always learn more about it - but you either "have it" or "you don't". You have to be born to write just as someone would be born to be an accountant or a pilot - everyone is unique and comes with their own skill sets and just because you can't or don't write doesn't make you an inferior person, just like just because I can't perform surgery doesn't make me inferior. One of the most amazing things is seeing people in the right place, recognizing their strengths and their limitations and utilizing their abilities in the right place and in the right way, as God made them to. Some of them will do that by being writers. Others won't, or shouldn't, whatever the case may be. In either event - no one is more important than the other!(less)

Probably fantasy and sci-fi (as well as their various sub-genres).

Though, really - no genre is safe from me!

I think what I love most about sci-fi and fantasy is the escapism - they define adventure for me. I can do anything and be anything in these genres. I can create my own world and simply GO FOR IT, as a writer and as a reader. I have also found these genres rich mine fields for powerful allegories.

It will always be a great disappointment to me that I cannot leap from castle roofs swinging a sword like Prince Valiant - or help Princess Leia escape from the Imperial prison block.

But by writing in these genres, I can satisfy this thirst for adventure; and hopefully - craft stories and messages that will resonate with my readers. (less)

Good Ship "Red Lily" by Constance Savery

Mary is 74% done with Good Ship "Red Lily": I'm loving this book a second time, and appreciating the truth in it far more than I did my first time. I don't know why I loved it so much both times, but I do. It's a wonderful story, with fascinating characters and conflicts.

It's special to own it. I'm grateful to the sweet friend who loaned me her precious old copy two years ago, and then tracked down a rare copy to give me as a gift. :))) You know who you are!

"STORY

Immediately intriguing! I'm a big sucker for that kind of introduction and it didn't slack off or slow down throughout the novel. I loved the pacing. Following Rye through his journey was epic. He didn't want to do everything he did but a man..." Read more of this review »
