I grew up in Michigan and Massachusetts, contributing to a split personality involving a love of farmlands and the ocean. Early influences include Harriet the Spy, Bozo the Clown, and the books of Judy Blume and Laura Ingalls Wilder.

I love anything that will make me look at the world in different ways. Favorite genres are science fiction, historical fiction, and contemporary novels. My all-time favorite authors are Barbara Kingsolver, John Steinbeck, and Carl Sagan.

I've worked as a reporter and freelance writer while writing fiction on the side. Ocean Echoes is my first novel.

We tend to think of ourselves as separate from nature. We’re not. We’re part of this Earth. We came from the ocean and we’re made of the ocean. The ocean is in our blood. And we won’t be able to live … Continue reading →

Ocean Echoes by Sheila Hurst
"There is so much I love about this book! The writing style is almost lyrical; some of the aquatic descriptions are so good that I reread passages.

Regarding the characters, Ellen is tough on the exterior but tenderness sneaks out in certain scenes..." Read more of this review »
A Walk in the Woods by Bill Bryson
"I've had this on my To-Read list forever, and I have no idea why I hadn't picked up any of Bryson's books before now...he's hilarious! He relates even the most dire circumstances with a dry wit that I'm sure was much developed from his many years..." Read more of this review »
Package Deal by Charissa Stastny
"After some of the darker fiction I've read recently, it was nice to have something light and uplifting. Stastny is one of the few authors who can get me to read romance. Her prose is crisp and her dialogue entertaining, and her characters always h..." Read more of this review »
Sheila and 3 other people liked Carrie's review of Love: Lost and Found:

Beneath a Scarlet Sky by Mark T. Sullivan

I enjoyed this more than A Moveable Feast. The Paris Wife completely transported me to 1920s Paris and into Ernest and Hadley's relationship. The first person narrative made it feel like a diary or memoir while the writing style felt similar to A Mov ...more

John Steinbeck is one of my all-time favorite authors. While Sweet Thursday is completely different from a novel like The Grapes of Wrath, it contains the magic, joy, humanity, and wisdom that he infuses into his novels so well.

I love the way Steinbe

Thank you - I loved it. I didn't know what it was about beforehand (and if I had I might not have read it) but I ended up loving it. It's definitely an emotional rollercoaster with some philosophical details thrown in.
