Janet Benton's debut novel LILLI DE JONG is the diary of an unwed Quaker mother in 1883 Philadelphia who decides to try to keep her baby. It was one of LIBRARY JOURNAL's and NPR's Best Books 2017 and a semifinalist for the Goodreads Choice Awards and has received many additional honors. It is available in paperback, hardcover, audio book, e-book, and large print editions. Janet's work has appeared in the New York Times, the Philadelphia Inquirer, and elsewhere. She holds an M.F.A. from the Univ. of Massachusetts, Amherst and a B. A. in religious studies from Oberlin College. Janet has worked hard to give books a central place in her life. If Lilli does well, I'll be able to devote the thousands of hours it will take to get the next book done sooner rather than later. Go, Lilli, go! ☺️ Warmly, Janet Benton(less)

Also that it made you think of all the women today who face prejudice, wage inequality, difficulty finding and affording good childcare, and so much more. Thank you for reading it! Spread the word. I do Skype visits with book clubs and libraries (and could do with other groups, too), or sometimes can come in person. I look forward to sharing my next novel with you. (less)

In situations of inequality and prejudice, telling the truth can ruin your life. A work of literature that explores this in a heartbreaking way is Thomas Hardy’s Tess of the d’Urbervilles. Young, innocent Tess is sent by her drunken lout of a father to live with a wealthy man in exchange for money. The wealthy man rapes her; she runs away, turns out to be pregnant, and tries to keep her infant... Read more of this blog post »

Lilli de Jong by Janet Benton
"This is one of those books where the main character faces hardship, after hardship, and you keep turning the pages just waiting and hoping for something good to happen to her! About an unwed mother who must flee her home because the father of the..." Read more of this review »

Lilli de Jong by Janet Benton
"Amazing book about a young single teacher who becomes pregnant in late 1880s in Philadelphia and how she survives the daily trauma of being shunned and disparaged because she’s an unwed mother."
Janet and 1 other person liked L's review of Lilli de Jong:
Lilli de Jong by Janet Benton
"The best fictional work I've read in a long time. This book could easily have been a morality tale, but instead it thoughtfully contrasts a moment of selfish passion with the months of self-sacrifice and service that result. It's the story of a Qu..." Read more of this review »

“1883. Third Month 16

Some moments set my heart on fire, and that’s when language seems the smallest. Yet precisely these bursts of feeling make me long to write. I sit now in a high-walled courtyard, amid the green smells and slanted light of early spring, with that familiar burning in my heart. I’ll need to destroy these pages before returning home, but no matter; for the first time since Mother’s death, words come to me.”
Janet Benton, Lilli de Jong

“Here's the thing, say Shug. The thing I believe. God is inside you and inside everybody else. You come into the world with God. But only them that search for it inside find it. And some-times it just manifest itself even if you not looking, or don't know what you looking for l. Trouble do it for most folks, I think. Sorrow, Lord. Feeling like shit.”
Alice Walker, The Color Purple

“People think pleasing God is all God care about. But any fool living in the world can see it always trying to please us back.”
Alice Walker, The Color Purple
