All our characters were our age so I was writing YA without even realizing that it was an actual age-group in publishing. I won’t bore you with the details, but to give you a short snapshot…about 25% of this book was written in the hospital while my mother underwent TWO back surgeries. Then I lost about the first 40 pages of edits because my computer crashed (which in a MG book

“The Legion thinks opening your heart to someone and trusting them with it is too much of a risk—well, I’m telling you, it’s worth it.” He grazed his knuckles against my cheek, and flipped a curl behind my ear. “You’re worth it.”

“Here is a lesson in creative writing. First rule: Do not use semicolons. They are transvestite hermaphrodites representing absolutely nothing. All they do is show you've been to college.”

“Let us find the dam snack bar," Zoe said. "We should eat while we can."
Grover cracked a smile. "The dam snack bar?"
Zoe blinked. "Yes. What is funny?"
"Nothing," Grover said, trying to keep a straight face. "I could use some dam french fries."
Even Thalia smiled at that. "And I need to use the dam restroom."
...
I started cracking up, and Thalia and Grover joined in, while Zoe just looked at me. "I do not understand."
"I want to use the dam water fountain," Grover said.
"And..." Thalia tried to catch her breath. "I want to buy a dam t-shirt.”
