Bank Street - Two River Times article
My book, Bank Street, was posted in the Two River Times of Red Bank on January 17, 2020. The text follows:
"Life lessons can be found in classrooms and
clinics, but they can also be unearthed on the streets of cities like Newark and New York. In Peter Cavalier’s debut coming-of-age novel “Bank Street,” the retired banker and historical buff unravels his life in the working world and
the things he experienced during the first three years of his 40-year banking career. Daily train commutes and walking the streets of Newark are interspersed with memories of the disco era, a citywide blackout, a
Yankees World Series and the bicentennial.
“Transforming an idea or story into a novel is quite a process,” said Cavalier, who relished the opportunity to share his stories of his early days working in Newark in the 1970s.
The father of three and grandfather of two tells the story of Jerry Flanagan and his journey after graduating college and falling in love for the first time. The novel celebrates the bonds of friendship that develop among
a group of “baby boomers” who are thrust into the real world for the first time.
One reviewer called it, “a mesmerizing story of love, a tale that features an interesting cast of characters and set against the backdrop of a world undergoing strong social changes.”
Cavalier himself spent 40 years in the banking try, 36 of them at Citibank in New York City, before his retirement in 2016. A graduate of Washington & Lee University, he also has an MBA from Fairleigh Dickinson University. He lives with his wife Marjorie in Red Bank. He is working on the sequel covering his experiences during the decades of the 1980s and 1990s.

Bank Street: A Novel by Peter Cavalier is a mesmerizing story of love, a tale that features an interesting cast of characters and set against the backdrop of a world undergoing strong social changes. Twenty-two-year-old Jerry Flanagan joins a group of young and passionate trainees to start his banking career in 1976. Just like his peers, he is ambitious and determined to succeed. But succeeding means working together with other trainees. He is smitten by Maria DeMarco, another trainee who is as intelligent as she is beautiful, and he intends to win her heart. But how can he do so without proving himself? An opportunity presents itself for him to prove himself, but it invariably leads him to put the life of the one person he loves deeply in danger. Can he uncover the brain behind the fraud in the bank, redeem himself, and win her heart?
Peter Cavalier has crafted a story with a powerful setting, exploring the social changes taking place in Newark, N.J. and characters that are real and compelling. This author knows the workings of the banking world or else he has simply done his job well because the setup and the events that build the plot feel real. The writing is exceptionally good, and the author’s unique phraseology skillfully combines short sentences and timely paragraph breaks for dramatic effect. The dialogues are well-written so that they feel natural and the author uses them to deepen character, move the plot forward, and enhance the elements of the conflict. Bank Street: A Novel is an interesting story that entertains readers with strong characters, professional writing, and ingenious plot lines. It is fast-paced and gripping."
