Chantwood Issue 15
Chantwood Magazine Issue 15, the special poetry edition, is now available (see Kindle Newsstand link below).
How I got top billing, I'll never know, but I'll take it. Two of my poems - 'Brave' and 'Bastille Day 2003' - were selected for this auspicious edition.

Brave Miracles
Last night, I got some miraculous news from Kristi, Editor-in-Chief at Chantwood Magazine.
You see, I had printed some poems for a spoken word event at a local wine-bar-jazz-joint call Riley's on the Square.
One of the poems was titled 'Brave.' It was slightly more revealing than I usually write, and I almost left it at home. Nah, I thought. I'll bring it along and read it if the crowd seems receptive.
Then the miracle happened.
I was sitting at a red light outside the venue, monsoon rain falling like meteors on my sensible Japanese SUV, checking my e-mail. I scrolled past the usual garbage and landed on a response from Chantwood Magazine. Kristi wanted to publish TWO of my poems in July. One of them was 'Brave.'
Thunder crashed like a miracle smacking me in the forehead from a God who knows how dense I am.
You better believe I read 'Brave' at the event. The small crowd liked it. And it stopped raining.

America's Emerging Writers

It's feasting time at the luxurious Kulptopia Writer's Retreat (my basement office). After a recent hungry period of almost daily rejections, the seeds have finally delivered a crop.
A few months ago, I was invited to submit a story to Z Publishing's 'America's Emerging Writers' anthology. That alone was noteworthy since I usually send my work unsolicited. Today, I received my pre-release copy that includes one of my favorite short stories. No edits were needed, so I sent it speedily back for publication.
Z Publishing transitioned into book publishing "in response to the major problem currently plaguing the publishing world: For writers, finding new readers can be tremendously difficult, and for readers, finding new talented authors with whom they identify is like searching for a needle in a haystack."
I will provide a link soon, and I hope you'll consider buying a copy. Stay tuned.

Folded Word (Updated)
The wise and discerning editors (love ya Jessi!) at Folded Word will be publishing one of my poems in their inaugural "Solstice Series Selections."
I am thrilled to be among the nine writers picked to be "the pioneers of what we are now planning to do more intentionally for upcoming winter & summer solstices."
Folded Word is "dedicated to exploring the world, one voice at a time. We publish chapbook-length manuscripts of poetry, fiction, travel narrative, translation, and literary essay. We also publish single poems, short stories, and essays on this blog."

Local Author Day
Mark Woodard, a cool dude who has proven you can get hired at a library without the obligatory shushing scowl, honored me recently with an invitation to participate in a "Local Author Day" to be held on Saturday, October 13, 2018.
Each branch in the Gwinnett county library system will be doing this, and I shall be holding forth at the Snellville Branch. I will ensure that my security team allows you close enough for a look at my gleaming tiara.
The exact times and format are still in the planning stages; it might be a book chat, Q&A, reading, or a mashup of everything - a literary gumbo.

Books and Beer: September 15 2018
Our first Books and Beer reading event on June 9 was an unqualified success. We packed the 'secret' back room at the neighborhood pub with poets, drunks, and other subversives.
Four authors donated books to the raffle, and about $100 went to the local food co-op. We also had plenty of open-mic participants.

Here are some frequently asked questions about the reading event.
Where is it?
Summits Wayside Tavern, in the back room behind the taps.
Address is 3334 Stone Mountain Hwy, Snellville, GA 30078.
When is it?
September 15, 2018 at 7:30pm. We'll go for a couple of hours unless lots of readers show up.
We'll fit everyone in.
Is there a deadline to signup?
No. But the venue is small, and we might have to turn people away.
Who can read?
Writers will read in these groups:
1. Writers who donate books to the raffle read first.
2. Open Mic
How does this event benefit the local food co-op?
Writers should bring two copies (or more) for donation to the raffle.
All proceeds from the raffle benefit the local co-op.
Can I sell copies of my glorious work?
Hell yes! Bring a bunch of copies to sell. Bring a pen and be prepared to autograph copies.
Be prepared to sign the writhing body parts of your new groupies. Be prepared for fame and fortune.
Can I invite others?
Absolutely. Bring friends, family, emotional support peacocks, whoever.
I write songs, not books. Can I participate?
Yes! The venue is small, so don't bring lots of elaborate equipment.
I write non-fiction. Can I participate?
Yes!
I write neo-nazi manifestos that degrade others that don't look or think like me. Can I participate?
No. You're a dick.
What is the schedule of events?
I cordially despise schedules. I have too many in my life already. But, if you insist, here's a vague outline:
7:00 - sign in and buy a beer; meet-and-greet
7:30 - group 1 will start reading
?:?? - raffle drawing for books from group 1 writers
?:?? - open mic

Books and Beer - June 9
On June 9, 2018, I am hosting a reading opportunity for local writers. If you have had a book published, and you are near Atlanta, GA on June 9, you are cordially invited to read. If not, feel free to come anyway and support the home team.
If you want to read, here is the plan:
1. Bring two copies of your book to raffle. The raffle benefits the Southeast Gwinnett Food Co-op.
2. Bring other copies of your book to sell.
3. Be ready to sign your book (and body parts of your new groupies).
4. Reading starts at 7:30PM. We'll go as long as necessary.
5. Plan to read for 5-10 minutes. If you feel particularly extroverted, you can invite questions or feedback from the crowd.
6. DEADLINE: Contact me no later than June 2, 2018 to get on the list. I need to notify the venue so they can staff up.
This is a mellow event in a small venue. No stress; just a good time. Maybe you'll make a buck or some new friends.
