Stirred, Not Shaken
Today, a tweet from @DimpleVerse prompted me with these words:
BLURRED
LINES
DEEP
POOL
LONGING
GREEN
EYES
At first, I thought of a stagnant pond with green scum on top. This reminded me of the stifling heat of an inland hike as I made my way up a trail toward a deserted beach. Then the mound from the beach berm reminded me of a grave mound and a family loss we remember every April.
I stirred all these images up, and out came this. Thanks for visiting.

Frilly
This was another "reverse processed" poem where I took a longer piece and trimmed it down. It also has a sort of sinister background and the visual appeal I like in concrete poetry.
The words include a touch of incongruous silliness I feel when some of my writing gets too dark or too serious.
Thanks for looking.

Love Lesson
In a reversal of my normal flow (where I take a tweet-sized poem and turn it into a longer work for my book), I took a long-ish poem that has been brewing and circumcised it, so to speak. Enjoy!

Two for Illumen
I guess if you stay in this writing racket long enough, anything is possible. For example, today I received a wonderful e-mail from Alban Lake Publishing saying they want to publish TWO (yep, two) of my poems in their Summer 2017 print edition of Illumen magazine.
Illumen is a print magazine of speculative poetry edited by Terrie Leigh Relf. It is published biannually in perfect bound digest format. It contains speculative poetry, illustrations, articles, and reviews.
Regarding speculative poetry, they say:
"Speculative poetry is one result of the application of imagination to reality. In speculative poetry, one’s 'vision' often is taken from a different angle, from another perspective, perhaps even from another time and place. Speculative poetry is usually tinged with one or more of the genres. Thus, in speculative poetry you find hints of science fiction, fantasy, folklore, myth, the surreal…and yes, even horror. Good speculative poetry will awaken a sense of adventure in the reader. That’s what we’re looking for: good, original speculative poetry."

Mule
Sometimes, a twinge of despair starts setting in, especially after a weekend that included several very nice rejection letters from very nice editors.
Sometimes, a twinge of despair starts setting in, especially after seeing a friend's grief (or feigned nonchalance) at losing a parent.
Sometimes, a twinge of despair starts setting in, especially after a long walk in a dark tunnel and beginning to doubt there is some daylight on the other end.
Still, it's fuel to energize the creativity. Memo to self: Keep kicking.

Deviations
I wish I was a better artist, you know, with paint and canvas.
A few years ago, I started dabbling in art and the "art scene, man." I still like it, but words have always been a more reliable medium for me.
During that time, I discovered DeviantArt on the inter webs, and I have been an off-and-on consumer/contributor ever since.
Recently, I added some of my own deviations. Feel free to take a walk on the deviant side here: http://mickeykulp.deviantart.com/gallery.

"Howl" was a monstrously definitive epic. I shall say no more. Go read this thing.
