“It wasn’t locked...” said Jackie. Though his voice was now a lot deeper, I could still detect the distinctly childish whine that signaled a plea of innocence with a hint of defensiveness.
“Wasn’t locked!? What do you mean it wasn’t—”
No, I realized, the door hadn’t been locked, not the one that could have prevented our children from entering our cabin through the bathroom. I could feel the cheeks on my face blushing bright crimson even as I was mentally kicking my other pair of cheeks. How could we have been so careless as to lock and bolt and chain the door to our cabin and then forget all about the bathroom door our children habitually used for going from their room to ours?”

“I, of course, had already done the math. It was not until the next interview when Denise brought her little Jaymee with her that the implications of her situation really began to sink in for me, however. The child was—as my grandparents used to say—cute as a button.
She was also a child, not a toddler or an infant as most teenagers’ little mistakes tended to be. Jaymee had been born not too long after my Jackie, and could easily have been mistaken for a fraternal twin.”
