Born and raised in the Red Rose county of Lancashire, Mike Hammersley began an enduring interest in America's civil war after he and his family moved to the leafier suburbs of neighbouring Cheshire.

For much of his adult life Mike worked in Information Technology, which gave him the chance to travel and frequently took him to his 'second home' of Alabama. The IT work required a combination of meticulous research and attention to detail that often had to be delivered within very tight deadlines and these skills have served him well in his second career as a novelist.

That depends on how it manifests itself.

If I am working on a specific book and have difficulty imagining a scene, or how the pro/antagonists would relate to each other, I revisit the setting with a different sense. For example, if I can’t ‘see’ the outcome, I try to ‘hear’ it or ‘touch’ it and approach the problem from another viewpoint.

I also find it helps to read the work of a favourite author to clear my mind and enjoy a descriptive passage by someone I respect as a writer.

I have many ideas at the moment and the difficulty is keeping them apart. But if I find I am lacking direction, I like to walk away (sometimes, literally) from the problem and turn my mind to some other task, such as allowing an embryonic idea for another story to develop any which way it takes me.

As always, I keep that notebook handy to jot down anything that occurs to me.(less)

Working whenever the muse visits.

I’ve always been used to working through when the ideas are flowing but that’s not always possible for some, especially if you are dependent on other people. Writing is a solitary occupation but it also means you can please yourself when you work.

Field trips to gather research material are also great fun, especially when you genuinely learn something from the experience.(less)
