I often go months, sometimes years in between writing. I only write when I can't keep it inside anymore. And when that happens, I can write anywhere. It doesn't matter. When the story is gushing out, I can be sitting in the middle of a crowded football stadium, and it wouldn't stop me.(less)

I came close a few times to everything falling into place, but it never quite did. The best thing about returning to my "roots" and just being a writer is that I HAVE TOTAL CONTROL! I don't need millions of dollars or hundreds of people. I don't have to worry about investors, or completion bonds, or union contracts or weather delays. It's just me in a quiet room (or on my porch), spinning out tales on my own.(less)

Back to my roots

I'm kind of like James Ellroy in that I don't read a lot of contemporary writers, because, as he said, I don't want them to influence how I write. The past few years I've been forcing myself to expand my reading circle to present day. I've read some good books, but I'm heading back to my roots, re-reading the classics that really inspired and influenced me to be a writer. Heavy on first half of... Read more of this blog post »

Um...Like many people, the first time I had ever heard of James Ellroy was when the movie LA Confidential came out in the 1990s. One of the greatest films of that decade. And I had put him on my list to eventually read one day.

"I was given an advance copy of this book.

Loooved it! So unique! Vivid descriptions and great characters. It's not plot heavy- more about atmosphere and nuance. But the author does a brilliant job. I've never read anything quite like it. "

"This fast-paced plot and description of the African landscape keep the reader enthralled in the story. Great characterization is an added bonus. I enjoyed learning more about the Peace Corps as well. I highly recommend The Whole of the Moon."

My daughter has this on her summer reading list, so I decided to read it to help her out. I'm a huge Shakespeare fan, but this is one of his weakest plays. It has no real plot, seems very disjointed and unfocused, and too much happens off stage. It h ...more
