Laura, hi!
The Honey Bus took me 10 years to write and three complete re-writes, because at first I wasn't clear on what I was writing about. The first version was a very wounded story focused on my feelings about my mother. I had to mature as a daughter to see that my childhood was just as fulfilling as it was challenging. It wasn't until my grandfather died in 2015 while I was writing the book that I realized how much of a savior he'd been, and how he'd used his bee societies to teach me about human ones.

I Dream of Jeannie

My childhood friend Anita had a swarm move into this vase on her front porch and didn’t know what to do so she called me. I offered to fetch them, but instead, she put live bees in her car and DELIVERED. (A few escaped, but she pulled over, all badass, and wrangled them back in.) […]

“Mother Nature knit a careful plan in place, and if you pulled one thread of it loose, the whole thing could unravel. These insects that made most people run in fear were the invisible glue of the earth that held us all together.”

“What was the statute of limitations on sadness?”
Meredith May, The Honey Bus: A Memoir of Loss, Courage and a Girl Saved by Bees

“On a deep level, the bees were teaching me the importance of taking care of myself. I could see, with my very own eyes, that defeat was not a natural way to be, even for insects.”
