My brain is a petri dish of ideas and the truth is that I have more ideas than I could ever turn into books. If I get stuck on a scene or plot point it never lasts more than a day or two, and the way I break through it is to write the first thing that comes to mind, even it feels like horrible writing. I tell myself that once I get flowing, the words will come easier, and I can always come back and edit or delete if what I've written doesn't turn out how I'd hoped. :)(less)

On Loving The Sinners

Sometimes, while out with my family in a well-populated public place, I do a sort of mental exercise with myself. In this exercise, I imagine I want to reach for my husband’s hand—something that, in reality, I do instinctively and often. But in this exercise, I imagine that before I can grab my husband’s hand, I have to look around. I need to assess the other people in the vicinity. I have to s...

Everyone needs to read this book. A glimpse into the active and beautifully imaginative mind of a 13-year-old boy with autism. A poignant, unforgettable read.

O'Flynn's short stories are just as dark and twisty as her novels. Alien Landscape is probably my favorite in this collection--it reads like pure horror but has an undercurrent of heartbreaking metaphor. Each story has its own distinct personality, i ...more

Good twists

Very clever twists in these stories. Crouch’s repeated use of sentence fragments are speed bumps for me, but that‘s just personal taste. Well-written overall, fast-paced, and Letty’s character is definitely one I want to root for.

I stumbled upon this book in an interesting way. I think, when I was researching an idea for a novel I intended to write (premise: kidnapping as narrated by the kidnapper), I bought this. Then I put it on my shelf and forgot about it and wrote 3 othe ...more

“You don’t have control” she spat. “Iris doesn’t have control. No one does. Control is an illusion. Terrible things happen with no reason at all. Terrible, ugly, fucked-up things like rape and death and loss, and there is no power, no control. There’s just the big, mean universe scraping your insides out and tossing them in the trash and there’s not a goddamn thing you can do about it”
