Mat Blackwell is a multi-award-winning writer, a visual artist, a prolific chaos-musician, and a reclusive troglodyte who veers between feeling universal oneness with all living beings, and wishing that they'd all just hurry up and die.

He has written jokes for performers as varied as Waleed Aly, Paul McDermott, Corinne Grant, Wil Anderson, Amanda Keller, and Barry Humphries. He wrote the funny bits of TV shows like THE GLASS HOUSE, THE SIDESHOW, GOOD NEWS WEEK, WEDNESDAY NIGHT FEVER, and ROOM 101, amongst many other things. That bit you loved? That was probably him.

He also co-created and co-wrote the hilariously grotesque sharehouse-black-comedy-meets-convict-period-drama BRUCE, starring (amongst others) Angus Sampson and Rich Davies.

Sometimes you're just not feeling it, but a book gets written with words on paper, not with good feelings, so to me it's more important to get the words onto that page: the terrible, terrible words on that page can be refined (or even just deleted) later on! Basically, when I have writer's block, I just write anyway, as uninspired and self-loathing as I might be. And more times than not, just the act of writing re-inspires me, or gives me some new direction, or reveals some new connection that I'd never seen, or something. The way I love to write is just to have a handful of ideas or characters, and just write, and see where the story goes from there, so I rarely feel writer's block: I discover what the story is really about as it happens, as the characters flesh themselves out and interact in this slowly-appearing world I've plonked them into, which is usually great fun. But when it's not fun, yeah, I think just writing badly is the key. Bad words can be fixed; blank pages can't (unless you write). (less)

The vast riches. The limos. The castles made of gold.

Seriously, for me, the best thing about being a writer is writing. I love the act of writing, the creation of parallel realities with nothing but symbols and blank space. I love it when a character does something that I didn't expect, when a story takes some turn I never imagined it taking. I love it when one story thread meets another, and unexpected magic is created, and I'm left blinking and scratching my head, and soon enough I can't imagine how I could've ever have thought I had a story without it. In short, it's the writing that I love. I've loved it since I was five, and I love it just as much now as I ever have.

Brilliant ideas! Wonderful world-creation. Some of the writing is a bit "poetic" for my personal tastes - sometimes wanders off into strings of metaphors and images and so on that didn't resonate or describe or really do much for me. But overall, an ...more
