Book Sale!

You know what I do for a living? As a librarian, I have to check the news, and for the past few weeks, it makes me wish I was reading something fun instead. So, I’m running a book sale, in case other people are feeling the same way.

Half off my books on Kobo and Apple Books right now, with Kindle to follow.

I’m going to go take some Advil.  Wash your hands, folks!

Writing Hiatus

Hello Folks!  I’m still around, still alive, and for the last two years “updating that website” has been on my to-do list.

Well, after two years, I’m comfortable saying that’s not happening any time soon.  I hope to start logging more recommendations at some point, but my fiction takes priority, and at the moment my day job has crowded out even that.

If you’re interested in learning more about my fiction, you can read the first three chapters of both of my books on this here site, whenever you’d like.  I’m currently working on a prequel to Bad Penny (about Damian’s sister), and I hope to get my book on him done soon.  My current plan is to hold both manuscripts until they’re done, and then release them close together, so it may be quite a bit of a wait.  If you’d like to get a sneak preview, feel free to reach out to be a beta reader!  I’m especially interested in getting feedback from women who have worked in tech.

I hope you all had an excellent 2019, and that you’ll have an even better 2020.

Kisses,

Jocelyn Adler

“If the Dress Fits” by Carla de Guzman

Some time ago, there was a twitter teapot tempest about a popular author putting out a book that was horribly, damagingly fat-shaming.

Rather than give that book any attention, would you like to read an awesome romance about a size 24 heroine who is happy with her life? I know this plus-size blogger and librarian would.

Check out “If the Dress Fits” by Carla de Guzman, the one with the killer cover.  When reading the book, I was a tiny bit put off by the initial depiction of how the main character’s family treats her weight (to be clear, the family was not terrible or damaging, but there was a clear expectation that she *ought* to lose weight at the beginning). But as the novel went on, my love for Martha eclipsed those initial worries, and I ended the volume with a happy sigh.  I loved this novel – on top of the excellent representation, the book really made the setting of Manila come to life for me, the way that only food descriptions can.

“Lucky Loser” by Yolanda Wallace

“Lucky Loser” is a F/F tennis romance.  I’m honestly not a huge sports romance fan, and when I read them, the sport is often a backdrop to the main attraction, which is always the romance.  This is because in M/F romances, the sport is rarely the point of conflict between the characters – it’s rare that they play each other.

Not the case here.

In this novel, the two leads are former doubles partners, now rivals at Wimbleton and I am SO HERE FOR THIS YOU GUYS.

“On Point” by Annabeth Albert

Here’s another entry from my #TBRPile – “On Point” by Annabeth Albert. This is the third in a series of M/M Navy SEAL romances, and while friends-to-lovers isn’t usually my thing, this one looks great. I’ve heard excellent things about this author, and I like the description of this book, but I keep waffling between this series and her series #gaymers which, let’s face it, is really much more on-brand for me. #Nerds4Ever #Overdrive #steamylibrarybooks

“Crazy for You” by Rina Gray

Do you feel the need to read a series in order? Because I’m tempted to start this one with book three: https://www.overdrive.com/media/32059...

A shy media consultant + a professional baseball player? Sounds good! Add in a fake romance? You got me. The heroine is struggling to lose weight, and the hero offers to coach her on gym stuff, which could go sideways, but I’m still pretty excited to read this book. #collectiondevelopment #steamylibrarybooks #TBRpile

On top of all that, I hear that Rina Gray is good at banter, which is one of my personal favorite things.

“Grim Shadows” by Jenn Bennett

I’m on a 1920’s book kick at the moment.  I read this in print a number of years ago, and I see that it’s available as an ebook on OverDrive.  It’s also available on audio, and I’m thinking of doing an audio re-read of “Grim Shadows” by Jenn Bennett. It’s a jazz-age San Francisco set novel, about an archaeologist and a museum curator with lots of paranormal elements, and I remember loving it.

This is book two in a series, and is my favorite of them, but the whole run is great.  I’d recommend just hopping on board for the full set.

“Love’s Serenade” by Sheryl Lister

I saw Sheryl Lister as part of a books on sale promo, and was really excited to tell you guys about “Love’s Serenade” because it’s a Jazz Age novel that deals with the Great Migration and recording contracts, and how awesome does that sound? But! I couldn’t find it on a library provider.

And then I realized it wasn’t out yet, and put it aside until it was out.  Well, it’s out, and it’s available on Hoopla right here: https://www.hoopladigital.com/title/1...  It’s the 1920’s set installment of a multi-author series called “Decades” telling stories set in each decade of the 20th Century, and it looks amazing.  Check out that cover:

The Unlikeable Demon Hunter by Deborah Wilde

The cover of this novel caught my eye a long time ago, and any heroine described as an “Unlikeable Hot Mess” has my vote. I’m part of the “hot mess” tribe myself, though I’m super likeable, if I do say so myself. Modest, too.

Anyway.

Nava Katz is hilariously messed-up, and it’s great fun to read about her.  I was super bummed that I couldn’t recommend this series for my #steamylibrarybooks because it’s part of KU and the ebooks aren’t in libraries. BUT! Thanks to the magic of audio, now they are! If you’re an audiobook fan, an urban fantasy fan, a hot mess fan… check ’em out! https://www.hoopladigital.com/title/1... #steamylibrarybooks

“Stars in their Eyes” by Pema Donyo

Have you ever heard of Anna May Wong, the first Asian-American Movie Star, who went to work in Europe 1920’s to get better roles? Would you like to read a romance about a character like her?

This one, “Stars in their Eyes” by Pema Donyo, isn’t as steamy as some of the other rec’s I’ve shared, but I’m so interested in it based on the subject matter, I don’t even care. This book looks killer.
