JD Stanley is an award winning historical speculative fantasy author and solitary Bardic Druid following the OBOD teaching path. JD honed voice and audio editing chops in the 80s as a radio announcer and studio engineer before embracing a lifelong guy-behind-the-curtain freelance career as a commercial and content copywriter, proofreader, ghostwriter and script doctor. Landed Entertainment director Junga Song once called JD “the greatest writer nobody’s ever heard of”.

Hell, half the time they're smarter than I am, so I don't like to cut them off when they're on a roll talking out something that can only be to the benefit of my next story. But I love the main character in a mad way and that universe is so vast, the story possibilities are endless, so... I'm turning it into a series. I'm working on books 2 and 3 simultaneously to make sure I don't break the mythology I set in book 1 - gotta keep that continuity. It's a bit of a challenge since I never intended to go this route, but I'm having a blast. I'll keep you all posted on progress. :)(less)

Story Element Tropes – Avoid Fantasy Writing Clichés 4

Story Element Tropes in Fantasy Writing

Knowing what we know now, let’s have a look at some fantasy story element tropes and talk out ways to avoid the clichéd version.

The bulk of advice about fantasy tropes tells us to avoid them, but really, we just want to avoid using them badly. Readers expect to see them in the stories they read, so let’s not disappoint them. What they don’t want to see are th
