The Best Writing Advice I've Gotten

Writing advice is a mixed bag. Sometimes you'll hear something so pertinent that it will rock your world. While I'm definitely not a pro at this point in my career, I've found that I give novice writers the same advice year after year:

You can't edit a blank page. I mean exactly that. No writer can move to the next step in the process, the editing hell, without words on a page. It seems simple, b Read more of this blog post »

Wilkie Collins
“The best men are not consistent in good—why should the worst men be consistent in evil?”
Wilkie Collins, The Woman in White

J.K. Rowling
“There is no good and evil, there is only power and those too weak to seek it.”
J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone

Libba Bray
“What if evil doesn't really exist? What if evil is something dreamed up by man, and there is nothing to struggle against except out own limitations? The constant battle between our will, our desires, and our choices?”
Libba Bray, Rebel Angels

Ernest Hemingway
“Being against evil doesn't make you good. Tonight I was against it and then I was evil myself. I could feel it coming just like a tide... I just want to destroy them. But when you start taking pleasure in it you are awfully close to the thing you're fighting.”
Ernest Hemingway, Islands in the Stream

Chögyam Trungpa
“Are the great spiritual teachings really advocating that we fight evil because we are on the side of light, the side of peace? Are they telling us to fight against that other 'undesirable' side, the bad and the black. That is a big question. If there is wisdom in the sacred teachings, there should not be any war. As long as a person is involved with warfare, trying to defend or attack, then his action is not sacred; it is mundane, dualistic, a battlefield situation.”
Chögyam Trungpa, Cutting Through Spiritual Materialism
