Favourite non-couple who should be one: Eponine and Marius from Les Mis (greatest unrequited love of all time, for me)... Or Louis and Lestat from Interview with the Vampire... they're a great couple in all but name... But I'm procrastinating...

Hi Michelle
Firstly, thank you so much for your lovely review. You missed a fresh Game of Thrones to finish it ... it's my book and I'm not sure even I'd do that :D

To answer your question, I was the stay at home parent with my two children, so in that sense, I brought some of my emotional experience as a man in that role to the table with Adam in Beat The Rain - the same with being a writer.

That said, I've been in a very happy relationship for the past 22 years, so Adam and Louise's marriage isn't reflective of my own ... I'd like to think we both make less questionable decisions than they do :)(less)

Write for the love of writing… there isn’t another reason

I’m such a dick. I barely wrote a word in 2018 and I’ve just looked at my website and realised I also haven’t written a blog article since May 2018 and even that was an old article rehashed. It’s title (I kid you not): Stop making excuses, you have got time to write.

Obviously, I’m the absolute King of not practising what I preach. Becau...

"I feel peaceful.

Once in a while, I read a book that astonishes me. Not simply because it is well-written and well-imagined, but because the sensitivity of the characters remind me of why human beings are worth it.

Why they are worth not only our t..." Read more of this review »

Beautiful - didn't enjoy it as much as The Accidental, found it slightly harder going, but really beautifully written.
More of Nigel's books…
“Memory is an artist, an impressionist. She adds colour, sound, smell and emotion to events at her whim. She adds, subtracts and embellishes until the event she started documenting is quite unrecognisable to the others who also experienced it, but at the same time, is more truthful to the owner of the memory. There is no reality. There are only impres- sions of past events, made by a million selves, all interacting with each other, vying for superiority. Reality doesn’t exist, perhaps in the end, that’s my only truth.”
Nigel Jay Cooper, Beat the Rain

“For books are people... people who have managed to stay alive by hiding between the covers of a book."
E B White.”
Nigel Jay Cooper

“Maybe that’s the way of love. It doesn’t wait to be invited in, and it won’t be coerced. It gently creeps under your skin, a mild itch at first, not giving itself away in case you scratch it and cause an infection. But then it sinks in deeper, getting into your bloodstream. It travels. By the time it reaches your brain and you’re aware of the infection, it’s already taken over your heart. In Natalie’s experience, love is anything but innocent. It’s a captor, a guard, imprisoning you in the clutches of another, knitting the fabric of your own life to somebody else’s, whether you like it or not.”

“I wish I didn't have to think about you. You wanted to impress me; well, I'm not impressed, I'm disgusted...You wanted to make damn good and sure I'd never be able to turn over in bed again without feeling that body beside me, not there but tangible, like a leg that's been cut off. Gone but the place still hurts.”
