“You could look through the windows at any one of these people, but you would only ever see what was there, not what wasn’t. The losses and absences didn’t show, despite so often being the immovable facts around which a life orbited.”
Alice Adams, Invincible Summer

“it’s that friendship and love are pretty much all we’ve got that’s worth anything.”
Alice Adams, Invincible Summer

“you are what you do. Not what you think, not even what you say you’ll do, but what you actually do.”
Alice Adams, Invincible Summer

Don Paterson

“True human goodness, in all its purity and freedom, can come to the fore only when its recipient has no power. Mankind's true moral test, its fundamental test (which is deeply buried from view), consists of its attitude towards those who are at its mercy: animals.”
