I was never so overwhelmingly "fearful of outcomes" about my visual art as about my writing. And OF COURSE my harp playing is awful: you're not going to be perfect as student learning to speak and think in a new way. Once I learned how to be let go of the idea of a perfect outcome in these areas, I was able to do this in my writing practice also.

Standard advice to cure writer's block is "write anyway." I've done that, and the writing is stiff and unhappy, and then I get more locked into the negative mindset that blocked me in the first place. I'd rather suggest, instead, that you do a warmup. Something that doesn't matter. Find a writing prompt, from a book or on-line source. I suggest a children's prompt; they're more fun. Set a timer for five minutes. Write. Alternately: draw. With a pen. Stop when the timer stops. Ta-da! Your creative muscles are warmed up.

You'd never expect a performer of music or theater, or an athlete, to leap into the spotlight or the big game without stretching first. The thing you created in five minutes will likely not be a masterpiece of literature...but you can accept that, or you should, because ... Come in. You made it in FIVE MINUTES. The long-term result is your goal here though. Daily practice at accepting imperfection from yourself teaches you an important skill: letting go of your inner critic.

This novella was my escape-/just-for-fun/comfort-writing project after the stress of last year's election, and I hope that it'll be a fun, comforting escape for readers as well. It's..." Read more of this review »
