Ari’s Recent Updates

Prisoner of Ice and Snow by Ruth Lauren
"Quite enjoyes this middle grade fantasy - tho it's middle grade in the same way Tamora Pierce is (which is to say the characters all acted mature and dealt with political and personal matters most teenagers would have issues dealing with capably)...." Read more of this review »
The Book of Ordinary People by Claire Varley
"The Book of Ordinary People was a pleasure to read. I loved the way Varley wove together these separate stories, creating a connection of which the characters were mostly unaware but which we, as readers, could appreciate. The book speaks to a num..." Read more of this review »
The Calculating Stars by Mary Robinette Kowal
"Utterly fantastic! If you liked Hidden Figures or The Right Stuff, you'll love this fictionalized account of the space race in a slightly different version of 20th century history. My only real quibble is the subplot with her aunt, because I don't..." Read more of this review »
Ari and 40 other people liked Kaitlin's review of Guns of the Dawn:
Guns of the Dawn by Adrian Tchaikovsky
"Honestly, I am shocked how much I enjoyed this. I have never read a book which is focused as much on warfare and death, tragedy and sorrow, and come away from it with a smile and a love of the book. This is the first one I can say I've read, cried..." Read more of this review »

Action-adventure science fantasy which I think was trying to be a science fiction thriller complete with obligatory action girl, car chases, shootouts and Japanese gangsters.

Dorothy Parker
“Heterosexuality is not normal, it's just common.”
Dorothy Parker

Randy Pausch
“The brick walls are there for a reason. The brick walls are not there to keep us out. The brick walls are there to give us a chance to show how badly we want something. Because the brick walls are there to stop the people who don’t want it badly enough. They’re there to stop the other people.”
Randy Pausch, The Last Lecture

Nicholson Baker
“I woke up thinking a very pleasant thought. There is lots left in the world to read.”
Nicholson Baker, The Anthologist

Eve Ensler
“Cherish your solitude. Take trains by yourself to places you have never been. Sleep out alone under the stars. Learn how to drive a stick shift. Go so far away that you stop being afraid of not coming back. Say no when you don’t want to do something. Say yes if your instincts are strong, even if everyone around you disagrees. Decide whether you want to be liked or admired. Decide if fitting in is more important than finding out what you’re doing here. Believe in kissing.”
Eve Ensler

J.K. Rowling
“Is 'fat' really the worst thing a human being can be? Is 'fat' worse than 'vindictive', 'jealous', 'shallow', 'vain', 'boring' or 'cruel'? Not to me.”
J.K. Rowling

Camille Adams I looooved The Black Jewels trilogy. I have searched "hero's journey" lists for other such books and still haven't found any I love as much. Maybe we'll find similar stuff in each other's recommendations. Thanks for the friend invite :-)
