Turnbull Bindings: Early German
Amongst the Alexander Turnbull Library’s rare books collection are a number of 15th- and 16th-century northern European blind-stamped bindings. This particular example fits the Germanic style of the period, but thanks to some research by Anthony Tedeschi, Curator of Rare Books and Fine Printing, we are able to add further details.
The decorative stamps, and the gryphon motif in particular, are associated with the bookbinder known as the ‘Haller-Meister’ who was active in Nuremberg between 1478 and 1517. The floral-patterned catchplates, too, are often associated with Nuremberg in style.
What makes the discovery even more exciting is that the book was also printed in Nuremberg by Anton Koberger in 1482, so it appears likely the binding is original and has protected the contents for the last 535 years.
Astesanus de Ast, Summa de casibus conscientiae. Ed: Bartholomaeus de Bellatis and Gometius de Ulixbona. Nuremberg: Anton Koberger, 11 May 1482, Alexander Turnbull Library, fRInc ASTE Summ 1482.
