On Mondays, twelve year old Brooke will be addressing a part of tweendom that drives her crazy. Today, she is tackling the topic of chores.

Hey Mom,

I know I sometimes bother you about this topic, but, I was wondering…

WHAT’S THE USE OF CHORES??

Okay, I get that it is to help keep the house clean, but, I just don’t...

When Changing Times Leave Us Spinning

Tripping in times of transition by Katie M Reid

Times of transition often leave me disoriented and downright frustrated. When pressure holds me down and unanswered questions weigh heavily on my mind, I am strategically positioned to grab hold of God. But many times I go forward—relying on my own strength—because I don’t like waiting my turn. My heels get worn with callouses after many rounds of limbo and eventually I land flat on my back in exhaustion—in need of healing—as the ceiling spins overhead.

Waiting for the next thing is hard. I...

Book Review and Interview with Authors Wendy Speake and Kelli Stuart (Life Creative)

Life Creative quote by Kelli Stuart and Wendy Speake

Still in my pajamas at an embarrassing hour, I open the package. I wrestle with the stiff cardboard to reach the beloved contents, pawing for a treat like a bear with a honeycomb. Finally book in hand, the emotions rise, threatening to fill tear ducts.

At last. Words to connect the dots between my reality and my wiring. A “me too” from others who understand this thirst for beauty and the hunger to create with baby on hip and hip teens still living in the house—and to do it today, not tomorro...

I’m Not God’s Favorite (Special Announcement)

Settle down and settle into the Savior's love for you image by Katie M. Reid Photography

Sometimes I hear people say, “I’m God’s favorite!”

I don’t think they really believe that God loves them more than everybody else, but maybe they feel particularly blessed or loved because something great happened to them.

Regardless, this “I’m God’s favorite” statement rubs me the wrong way. Images of biblical Joseph flash in my mind. He was thrown into a pit by angry, jealous brothers who wanted to kill him because he was Daddy’s favorite and had a colorful coat to prove it—not to mention...

Birthing Hope through Desperation

Desperation can give birth to dedication quote by Katie M. Reid for Kelly Balarie's Purposeful Faith

Are you in a desperate situation? Does it feel like you’re facing a brick wall, with no way to get around it? Are you struggling to find hope as the season changes?

In 1 Samuel 1:1-27, 2:1-11 we read about a woman, named Hannah, who found herself in a time of desperation.

Hannah was deeply loved yet she carried around a haunting emptiness. In a time when a woman’s womb was wound up tightly to her worth, Hannah’s barrenness must have flashed “broken” like a neon sign in a dark alley.

Not only...

Turning 40: And Another Hard to Believe Yet True Statement (Giveaway)

Freak Out sign from the fair

If you’ve been following along on Instagram Stories, then you know that I’ve been counting down to my 40th birthday.

Yes, it’s true, I’m turning 40. I’m thankful that the “Over the Hill” 40th birthday party thing isn’t popular anymore. 40 is young!

Last year I shared 39 things you might not know about me, but this year I’m sharing one thing, sure and timeless.

Some thoughts on turning 40…

What is the measure of success at 40?

Is it things you can check off your to-do list, your Wish List, or...

I Can’t Do This Without You (When You’ve Reached the End of Yourself)

I can't do this without you quote by Katie M. Reid

I clutched the minivan door handle as if my life depended on it. A life was depending on it. The life of my unborn daughter—Baby Cinco, our Songbird. It was two weeks before her due date according to my calculations (three if you ask the Doc).

I was in active labor and the contractions weren’t letting up. In true tightly wound fashion, I told Adam to call the hospital and let them know we were on our way and to be ready. I was not going to wait around at registration to answer ridiculous que...
