Pat Dunlap Evans was born in Michigan, but at age two, her family moved to San Antonio, Texas, and later to Dallas, where she attended South Oak Cliff High School and Southern Methodist University. Dropping out of school to support an early marriage, Pat eventually completed her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in the English/Creative Writing sequence at University of Missouri, Kansas City, where her husband quarterbacked the NFL Chiefs. Writers must allow the brain and fingers to work their magic together. Sometimes I don't have a clue what I'm going to write about, but if I just sit down and get the fingers flowing on the keys, stuff pours out. Perhaps too much stuff so I'll have to edit heavily later, but some of my best fiction has come from no forethought. "Writers write, that's what they do," my professor used to tell me. So if you're stuck, just start writing about anything. Between the lines, you may discover a gem.(less)

Run off a dock like a little boy and scream "Bonsaiiiieee!" Or, come to terms with a dying parent over a long-ago misunderstanding. Or enjoy the warm banter of a childhood friend who is now old. These are things I've never experienced in my life, but I have lived them through my characters. Not that my life is boring, but writers always want more.(less)
