Repost – The Markaz Review

Palestinian Artists & Anti-War Supporters of Gaza Cancelled

27 November, 2023 • Nada Ghosn

Dear audience,

In continuation of my support for Palestine and Palestinian voices, I am reposting a recent article from Nada Ghosn who wrote this article for The Markaz Review.

Paintings by Ayman Baalbaki removed from Christie’s London’s Nov. 9, 2023 sale. (Left) “Anonymous,” 2011-18, acrylic and carton laid on canvas 70×50cm, and “Al Moulatham,” 2012, acrylic on printed fabric, 200×150cm (courtesy Christies).

Events deprogrammed, works withdrawn from sale, awards postponed — since October 7, a number of creatives have dealt with a wave of reticence or cancellations on the part of European and American institutions.Nada Ghosn

On October 16, after the deadly Hamas attack on Israeli territory, Palestinian author Adania Shibli received a brief email from the Frankfurt Book Fair, informing her that the presentation of her prize had been postponed, and that her meeting with the public had been cancelled. The German association LiProm, which was to present her with the LiBeraturpreis for authors from the Global South, summarily justified the decision by citing “the war between Hamas and Israel” that had been raging for 10 days, and the desire to make Israeli voices “particularly audible.”

A few days later in New York, the 92nd Street Y, a venerable Jewish institution, canceled a scheduled reading by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Viet Thanh Nguyen without explanation, just a day after he signed an open letter condemning Israel’s “indiscriminate violence” against Palestinians in Gaza, according to Reuters. Nguyen wrote on Instagram, “Their language was ‘postponement,’ but no reason was given, no other date was offered, and I was never asked. So, in effect, cancellation. Some people in social media comments say they heard it was a bomb threat. I’ve heard no such thing from 92Y staff.”

The 92Y didn’t stop with cancelling Nguyen alone; a few days later, the organization put its prestigious literary series on hold after several writers withdrew from events to protest its decision not to hold Nguyen’s reading, according to the New York Times. 92Y disagreed with Nguyen’s anti-war stance, but the novelist wasn’t alone. More than 750 artists signed an open letter in the London Review of Books calling for an immediate cease-fire, charging that Israel’s “unprecedented and indiscriminate violence” in Gaza constituted “grave crimes against humanity.” [to continue reading this article, please visit The Markaz Review]

Palestine Museum- Petition to include Palestinian Artists

Special Request
The Palestine Museum US is asking your help in signing and sharing a petition calling upon the Venice Biennale to include a Collateral Event exhibit of artwork from 23 Palestinian artists, including some from Gaza, in its upcoming Biennale Arte 2024. The Biennale rejected a proposal submitted by the Museum thus denying the 23 artists an artistic expression opportunity while at the same time giving the State of Israel a free reign to exhibit whatever they want and promote their narrative and propaganda. Titled ‘Foreigners in Their Homeland,” the Palestinian exhibit sheds light on the difficult living conditions under the Israeli occupation.

Please click here to read the full curatorial statement of the exhibit as submitted to the Biennale.

Islamophobia: Khaled A. Beydoun.

Islamophobia has spiraled into a global menace, and democratic and authoritarian regimes alike have deployed it as a strategy to persecute their Muslim populations. With this book, Khaled A. Beydoun details how the American War on Terror has facilitated and intensified the network of anti-Muslim campaigns unfolding across the world. The New Crusades is the first book of its kind, offering a critical and intimate examination of global Islamophobia and its manifestations in Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and regions beyond and in between.

I wanted to repost this because the war on Palestine is not separate to the pushing of islamophobia and it’s development from media to stereotypical negative tropes that have existed for the past 70+ years. This is not an accident. The dehumanisation of Muslims is having catastrophic effects on the value of Muslim lives. No more so currently than what we are seeing in Palestine.

Those that follow my work know how important authentic Muslim representation is throughout my books. There is a reason for that. We have to fight against the mass media narratives that permeate every aspect of our society. Literature is one of them.

Muslim Lit Festival -Postponed

Postponement of MLF Birmingham 2023.

After careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to postpone the Litfest till next year. Unfortunately, some of our confirmed speakers have withdrawn, and several publishers have expressed their inability to attend. The decision to cancel was not made lightly and has been influenced by the current adverse situation and motivation in the community especially due to the ongoing conflict in Gaza.We understand the disappointment this may bring, but please know that we remain dedicated to the festival and its purpose. We are actively exploring the possibility of rescheduling the event for February next year, when we hope to bring our community together in a more conducive environment.I hope this has not inconvenienced you too much and we look forward to welcoming you to the festival next year.
