Ever since she was a child, Kyla Stan enjoyed creating fantasy stories. In fact, she has a notebook from when she was a child filled with stories that are being updated for a modern young adult audience. Kyla knew at a young age that being a writer was her dream, and so she pursued it at the young age of sixteen.
Kyla hopes her writing will help other people with mental illness, such as anxiety and depression. Kyla also wants people to be aware of environmental issues, some of which are reflected in Forbidden Tides and her first self-published book about werewolves titled, Poet Tongue. She has a degree in communications, and a master’s in English and creative writing. Her dream is to become an English professor and inspire others to write.

Hi Sarah,

Thank you for your question. As a Latino woman, who is often "judged" because she isn't dark enough, I would say it's also offensive to consider someone not "native enough" because of the color of their skin. There are plenty of people, including myself, who have native blood, but their skin color also reveals otherwise. Everyone comes in a variety of colors with different backgrounds, and it's important to respect those differences.

Regarding the headdress, all I can say is it's revealed later in the novel, but I cannot give away any spoilers. My cover has been liked my several diversity groups, including a Native publication on Instagram. I was also nominated for the In The Margins award, a highly respected committee that celebrates diversity.

I hope this answers your question!(less)

New Updates + Project Teasers

Hey Readers! I hope you are all doing well in these troubling times. I'm taking the time spent indoors to continue writing. Last year, I didn't post any updates after "Summer 17 Mermaid" was released for varying reasons, most of them private and painful to talk about. However, this year, I have many writing goals that I wanted to share with you along with some announcements: -Some of you may remem Read more of this blog post »

“He turned his attention towards the previous speaker and mumbled again in a language Violet could not understand.
“It must be a sign from the Creator. The prophecy… it has come true.”
Kyla Stan, Poet Tongue

“Violet, wake up! You are not in some pre-colonial, pre-internet hellhole. WAKE UP! But no matter how many times she rubbed her eyes or pinched herself to the point of almost bleeding, she was still there, on that same dirt floor, on the same animal pelt, still trying not to look at that one boy.
Was she a captive to these people?
Was she some sort of prisoner?”
Kyla Stan, Poet Tongue

“You do not understand what has happened to you… what I did to you.” he said sternly. Cold fright swelled in her stomach. What happened after she felt the pain? It was all blank.
“What did you do to me?” She whispered.
“You are a wolf now, Violet. A part of our pack.”
“What? What the hell do you mean I’m a wolf?” She demanded.
“You are half wolf, a Skin Walker. In human words… I believe you say werewolf.”
Kyla Stan, Poet Tongue

“I'm selfish, impatient and a little insecure. I make mistakes, I am out of control and at times hard to handle. But if you can't handle me at my worst, then you sure as hell don't deserve me at my best.”
Marilyn Monroe

“Be yourself; everyone else is already taken.”
Oscar Wilde

“You've gotta dance like there's nobody watching,
Love like you'll never be hurt,
Sing like there's nobody listening,
And live like it's heaven on earth.”
