James Bennett is a British writer raised in Sussex and South Africa. His travels have furnished him with an abiding love of different cultures, history and mythology. His short fiction has appeared internationally and the acclaimed 'Chasing Embers' was his debut fantasy novel. James lives in London and sees dragon bones in the Thames whenever he crosses a bridge.

I read a history book about Barcelona and I'm currently reading Orwell's 'Homage to Catalonia'.
Other recent reads include 'Behind Her Eyes' by Sarah Pinborough and 'A Stranger in Olandria' by Sofia Samatar. Both great. (less)

The best piece of writing advice I ever recieved was this:
'Enjoy what you do, because it'll show on the page'.

After a decade of publishing stories and novels, I'd add that you can't please everyone and nor should you try. Some readers will hate parts of your writing that other readers love. Some reviewers will dedicate months to gleefully trashing your work while your sales continue to soar. But writing is a craft and every writer is human. We're always learning and (hopefully) improving, so if you want to write, remember that everyone has to start somewhere. So start now.

And I wish you the very best of luck! (less)

Three years ago, a man sat on a hill in Wales and wondered why he wasn’t living the life he’d always dreamed of. He lived in a city where he didn’t belong. He loved a man who didn’t treat him very well. He had a job he couldn’t stand. He couldn’t get anyone to take his writing seriously and, yes, he had come to believe that he’d never be good enough. That it wasn’t going to happen, not for him.... Read more of this blog post »

“Some women went for the knight. Others wanted the beast. Neither stood a chance of a happy ending. Until Rose. Rose who only wanted the real him, a secret he could not share. There among the scattered tulips, in a cold and silent embrace, the two of them said welcome home.”
James Bennett, Chasing Embers

“of personal care, no towels, toothpaste or soap. The inside of the house was a tasteful tomb. Loneliness by IKEA.”
