He was born approximately 1583 to John Johnson, lutenist for Queen Elizabeth I. When John died, Robert was made apprentice lutenist in the court of George Carey, 2nd Baron Hunsdon, where he probably studied under John Dowland, who was patronised by the Careys. He was lutenist to James I, the Lord Chamberlain's Men (later the King's Men) players, and to Henry Fredreick Prince of Wales (1594-1612). He is known for having written songs and incidental music for the plays of William Shakespeare, Ben Jonson, and Thomas Middleton. He died in 1633. ...more
