Greetings from Dallas!

Hi Y'all!

This week I’m settling in Dallas writing by day and attending wedding preparations by night for Bill’s Niece’s big day. I have a nice perch to write from looking down on the pool and the Dallas skyline.

This week, I talked to one friend in Austin by phone who was particularly down after having received his 50th rejection from agents about his books. While I sympathize with his plight, I told him that what kept me moving forward is knowing that people enjoy reading my stories and te...

Case Study: Coyote Lake Ranch, LLC vs. The City Of Lubbock

The Texas Supreme Court ruled in favor of a Muleshoe ranch in its battle with the city of Lubbock over water rights in a 6-3 ruling in May of this year.

Issue: The accommodation doctrine, which means a lessee should regard landowners’ rights when using the land for industrial purposes has traditionally applied to oil-and-gas producers removing minerals from land, but the court determined it also applies to groundwater.

Injunction Issue: The city of Lubbock is happy with another outcome of the...

A Walk Through Vail Village

Hi Y’all,

This week I’m coming to you from Vail, Colorado where I’m continuing to soak up the gorgeous scenery and fresh mountain air. Bill and I love hiking, so it’s a dream to be in the midst of miles and miles of trails. We took a walk around Vail Village a couple of days ago and took a handful of photos to share with you!

Authors on the Air with Pam Stack

Hi Ya’ll,

I’m coming to you this week from Vail, Colorado, a site for cool mountain air and natural inspiration for writing.

I recently had the privilege of being on Authors on the Air with Pam Stack to chat about Dollar Signs and my writing life. We had a great time and even had a couple of readers call in to ask questions and say hi! If you haven’t heard of Authors on the Air, I recommend checking it out. Pam, who calls writers her celebrities, interviews authors about their recent books an...

Write What You Know – A BookPeople Recap

Hi Ya’ll,
As many of you know, Dollar Signs is set in Austin, and the city is as much a character as Merit, Betty, or Ag. As an Austin dweller and someone who absolutely loves the city, I was excited to recently have a signing at BookPeople, the largest independent bookstore in Texas!

BookPeople's Scott Montgomery hosted ourpanel consisting of Martin Limón, the author of Ping Pong Heart, Billy Kring, author of TonTon: A Hunter Kincaid Mystery, and me. We discussed how our careers are used in...

Behind the Scenes with Betty

Hi Y’all!

You may have seen Bettyisms pop up on social media every once in awhile or in my monthly newsletter. As you know, if you’ve read Dollar Signs, Betty is the mothering office manager of the Law Office of Merit Bridges. I was recently asked in an interview with BookPeople about Betty:

Q: Betty is one of my favorite characters in the book—the combination of “tough as nails” yet “motherly/grandmotherly” is intriguing. What was your inspiration for her?

A: Betty was named after my office...

May/June Web Round-Up!

This past weekend I presented Legal Issues for Authors at the 2016 Writers' League of Texas Agents & Editors Conference in Austin.

IMG_6397

The biggest question I always receive at this type of event is: “What if I want to write about my Aunt, Uncle, Great Grandmother, etc.?” I always answer the same way – “Who owns the rights?” If your Mother wrote you letters, they are yours. If your Mother had an archive of letters they belong to her heirs. Do you have brothers and sisters who shared in her estate...

Back in Austin!

Hello Readers & Friends:

It was a great month in Santa Fe, and I actually got some writing done in the middle of all the fun we had. I’m back in Austin now preparing for the Writers’ League of Texas Agents and Editors Conference. I’ll be presenting Legal Issue For Authors on Sunday, June 26th. This conference is especially important to me because it was 7 years ago on June 26, 2009 that Bill (Rodgers) & I met at this same event.

As you know, I write legal thrillers, but you may not know that...

1.A must is theGeorgia O’Keefe museum (closes at 5).

2. Eat anything at Cowgirl BBQ, especially the Game Burger with Green Chili.

3. Have breakfast at Pasquale’s and sit at the community table. Best eggs in town - anything is good. (Plaza Cafe for regular breakfast.)

4. Eat Wednesday Christmas (chicken enchiladas...
