Owen W Knight is an English writer of contemporary and speculative fiction. His works include Another Life, described as ‘It’s a Wonderful Life for the 21st Century’ and The Invisible College Trilogy, an apocalyptic dystopian conspiracy tale for young adults, described as ‘1984 Meets the Book of Revelation’.
Owen was born in Southend-on-Sea at a time when children spent their days outdoors, creating imaginary worlds that formed the basis of their adventures and social interaction.
He has used this experience to create a world based on documented myths, with elements of dystopia, mystery and science fiction, highlighting the use and abuse of power and the conflicts associated with maintaining ethical values.
Owen lives in Essex, close to the co

Be objective when considering whether what you write has a market.
If you believe you have a good book, don’t be swayed from your belief.
If you hit a barrier, don’t give up. Set it aside. Allow time each day to consider options of how to take it forward.
Don’t write for a current trend. It will have passed by the time your book is written, edited and published.
Don't give up when trying to find an agent or publisher. After writing the first book in my trilogy, I contacted every relevant UK agent, then publisher, starting with the major ones. I then approached independent publishers, including members of the Independent Publishers Guild. I had almost given up and had intended to self-publish when, six months after writing, my publisher-to-be contacted me and things moved forward.
I spent a year going through the same process with Another Life, before I received two offers on consecutive days: New Year's Eve and New Year's Day!(less)

The challenge was to introduce other themes to fit and to round out the story. In my The Invisible College Trilogy, I made a passing reference to the Green Man and how the church had historically absorbed pagan beliefs to appease converts to Christianity. Further research revealed that, through history, the expressions on images of the Green Man changed from jovial to merry, smiling, serene, worried, then through to distressed and tormented and eventually resigned.
Here was the perfect parallel to the life of my protagonist. The introduction of the Green Man allowed me to bring in elements of myth and secret practices in a hidden corner of middle England (another theme from my trilogy). I was keen to avoid suggestions of magic and mysticism by blurring the lines between dream and reality.
Early on in the process, I identified a twist and an ending that provides suspense and an attention-grabbing surprise to readers.(less)

The Challenges Of Cover Design

(An illustrated version of this post appears on my website: https://owenknight.co.uk/2021/02/15/t...)
The cover design of my latest novel, Another Life, has been praised by reviewers, bookshops and readers. Undoubtedly, most of the credit must go to my publisher, Burton Mayers Books, for their accurate interpretation of the story and creation of a compelling image.
Cover design is both an art and a Read more of this blog post »
