And lots of reading by many different writers in many different genres. I also find that a knowledge of and feeling for the dramatic structure used in plays and screenwriting to be very helpful in setting up a plot. I rarely pay any attention to it now that it's in my system, but it's really good to know about. (less)

But there are days when I really feel that the well is dry. When I have no ideas, and nothing to write, and am certain that I never will again. So what I do is, I decide to write just a couple of sentences, maybe even one. Or maybe just some scratches, a few notes. So I sit there noodling for the prescribed amount of time I set for working, which is about 3 to 4 hours in the mornings. Almost inevitably, that one sentence leads to three or four hours of work. At the end, it may not be very good, but it usually leads to a much more productive session the following day.(less)

"Stone does a great job of providing what is, in effect, a biography of Zeus. I wanted a little more context for his claims that there was just one Great Mother, but that's just a slight quibble I have with what is otherwise a really fun and though..." Read more of this review »

“Within a week of the girl's sacrifice, the clouds above Ólympus had broken up and spread south. Soon, a steady rain fell upon the plains and mountainsides, producing just enough downfall to fill the wells and cisterns but not ruin the crops. The natives, who had been appalled at the sacrifice, were overjoyed. Embers of hatred and fear still smoldered in their eyes, but there was also, now, a flicker of respect.”
