J.K. (Jim) George (N3BB) has been an avid reader and amateur radio enthusiast, with special love for Morse code and radiosporting, since his teenage years -- over fifty years ago. He started his hobby listening to short-wave broadcasts and long-distance AM radio stations. He is a graduate of Virginia Tech, where he was president of the VT Amateur Radio Club and was inducted into the Virgina Tech Academy of Engineering after serving as Chair of the Advisory Boards for both Electric and Computer Engineering, as well as the College of Engineering. He is an avid Virginia Tech sports fan. He completed his graduate school at Arizona State University, specializing in semiconductor materials physics.

Book Review: Origin Story – The Big History of Everything, by David Christian

What a terrific book! This "Big History" is relatively new, published in May 2018. and a wonderful selection of my men's book club. The feud between the Steve Bannon wing and the Kushner wing (Jarvanka in the book lingo) is never ending. Wolff spices the dialogue with lot and lots of quotes, with liberal use of many of the crude curse words in the English language ... courtesy of Bannon sections. VP Pence is not treated well, coming across as a stone-faced grinder who more or less bides his time before Trump flames out in some dramatic fashion and is called into the game. Bannon and Trump are the stars, with the supporting cast using creative ways of describing POTUS ranging from the courteous ill-informed to just plain a moron.

As an example of "strategy" on foreign policy, on page 227 the new Jarvankian-Trump thinking about the Middle East, distilled to a summary, was to pit Israel, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia against Iran. Giving Egypt and the Saudis what they want against Iran, virtually anything that does not interfere with the US's interests, would pressure the Palestinians to make a deal with Israel. Voila! Problem solved.

Trump is depicted as an insecure, tragic character, but as in the campaign and election itself, who has a knack of mining the feelings of enough voters to carry the day. I'm at the point where, although I dislike him personally and feel his presidency is teetering on the edges of several possible catastrophes, I don't believe the polls that mount up against him and will believe he's politically dead only after I see the votes. So far, his loyal mostly older white-male legions have remained by his side, and the Republican Party appears afraid of, and surrogate, to POTUS. The Democrats have yet to have a cogent voice and compelling candidate to challenge this most unusual man. Surely the US can do better.

The big winner here is the author, Wolfe. He has a home run in terms of sales and must be laughing all the way to the bank. ...more "
