Nothing quite inspires me like nature and every time I'm out surrounded by trees and water and mountains I feel invigorated to return to my worldbuilding. :)(less)

Ultimately I'd love the ability to use magic, so I'd probably spend some time with Moiraine from the Wheel of Time books or follow Mara Jade around from the Star Wars Expanded Universe. I've always wanted to use a lightsaber. :)(less)

Winter Solstice

We’re now one day to the winter solstice (the darkest day of the year) and four days to Christmas Eve. I’m trying not to rush it along, to appreciate the dark, the quiet (that would be the OUTSIDE quiet as inside I have two noisy kids and two marauding cats). So I’m going to throw on a cozy sweatshirt, pour some coffee, get some writing in on TDQ, and quietly disappear from here until New Year’s. Read more of this blog post »

I loved the movie, so this book has been on my TBR for a while now, and I’m so happy I finally read it! It felt cozy, familiar, funny, and utterly delightful. A feel-good book I’m sure I’ll read again. Calcifer is my fav!

A funny, dark fantasy that had me both grossed out (lots of grisly crafting going on!) and delighted. Can’t Maud just be left to sew and tend her undead garden in peace? I wasn’t expecting to enjoy this quite so much, but it had me laughing all the w ...more
Kingdom of Essence by Holly Karlsson
"Oh man. I LOVED this. The worldbuilding is rich and immersive. The magic is so, SO cool and creative. The whole “reluctant” hero thing is done so well, poor Elitsa doing her best to stay out of trouble and things just keep piling up. Mysteries abound" Read more of this review »
Holly answered a question about Kingdom of Essence:
Kingdom of Essence by Holly Karlsson
Hi! KoE is an adult fantasy novel, but is suitable for an upper-YA audience. There is fantasy violence (not excessively graphic) and minimal profanity.
