Incredible Indies welcomes Karen Mossman!

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.

I'm going to be the same age as my birth year next year and that quite daunting as I always considering it old! My hubby retires at Christmas and we will be moving to the Anglesey, a small island off the North Wales coast. So good times ahead. I've written five books in total. Three are short story collections with a theme. The other two are novels.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?

My latest book is called The Secret and is had been floating around in my head and on paper for several years. My teenage years were in the 70s and it was an exciting era for me, so I set my book during that time. I loved the music and the fashion and the innocence of the day, and I've included all that in the story too.

What authors, or books have influenced you?

Oh, I don't know there are so many. Jeffery Archer is always a great teller and for my genre Nora Roberts is queen.

What are you working on now?

I'm taking part in NaNoWriMo, which is National Novel Writing Month. It's held every November and this is the first time I have taken part. It's quite daunting as the idea is to write 50,000 words during the month. That's roughly 1600 a day. My story is called The Calling, about an English girl who goes to America to find her father after her mother dies. She doesn't find him straight away, but finds a husband. He turns out to be a bad man. Fleeing him she is eventually settles on a ranch as a Nanny to twin girls. But of course, the past always has a way of catching up.

Do you have any advice for new authors?

First and foremost write for pleasure. Write what you enjoy.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?

Why use ten words when one will do.

What's next for you as a writer?

Well my career as a writer is just starting out. This year I discovered a Facebook group called The #Awethors and learnt so much. I've learnt enough to know I want.

The Secret is available for pre order and is released on December 1st.

Tell us about yourself and how many books you've written

I am a fantasy and dystopian author from Leicester in the UK. I spent two years living in Japan and can speak Japanese to a relatively high standard, but then I returned to the UK and began a teaching career. I now teach full time in a primary school, and spend my free time with my wonderful husband and four year old son. I have written and published two full length novels. My first was a dark, psychological dystopian called The Phoenix Project, and my second was an epic fantasy called A Chronicle of Chaos. I also released a short story entitled 'The End' as part of the Awethology Dark story collection.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?

I initially released The Phoenix Project through Amazon Kindle Direct, but then was picked up by US publisher Booktrope in January 2015. This book has since been through significant editing and proofreading, ready for its re-release later this year.

The Phoenix Project was largely inspired by the films and books that shaped by childhood and adolescence. I have always been drawn to deep, complex and dark plotlines and have drawn on those to help me write The Phoenix Project. Specific influences include 1984, A Handmaid's Tale and A Brave New World.

What authors or books have influenced you?

My fantasy series (of which A Chronicle of Chaos is the first installment) was heavily influenced by Terry Brooks' The Word and the Void trilogy, The Lord of the Rings trilogy, and (though not a book...) the Final Fantasy game series. I am also very inspired by the work of C.L. Schneider and The Crown of Stones trilogy.

What are you working on now?

I am currently juggling the next two books in the Light and Shadow Chronicles series. one is written, but I am adding more detail, and the next is 27,000 words into the first draft.

Do you have any advice for new authors?

Never give up! Writing is tough to begin with, but practice really does help you to improve and the better you get at writing the more enjoyable it becomes as well.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?

I know it's a bit of a cliche now but 'Show, don't tell' is something I come back to time and time again.

What's next for you as a writer?

I am determined to work my way through my whole Light and Shadow Chronicles series (all 18 stories included!) which is a huge project but I am thoroughly enjoying it!

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.

I'm a married mom of four and have been writing seriously for about five years. I vend at a Ren Faire every summer. I love pirates, yarn, chunky babies, kilts, and Johnny Depp. I have written three books. Two are published and one is out with my editor.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?

My latest release is Slither and it's a horror/paranormal romance. I don't know that anything in particular inspired it. It was actually a short story that just kept growing.

What authors, or books have influenced you?

Oh, so many. I think every book I've ever read has influenced me in some way. Everything from L.M. Montgomery to Neil Gaiman has made a place in my heart.

What are you working on now?

Right now I'm waiting on the edits to come back for Heckled, which is about a man who lives with a mental illness that takes the form of an angry Scotsman only he can see, and Maternal Consumption, which is my NaNoWriMo novel.

Do you have any advice for new authors?

Life is short.

Write your book.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?

“If you want to be a writer, you must do two things above all others: read a lot and write a lot. There's no way around these two things that I'm aware of, no shortcut.”

― Stephen King, On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft

What's next for you as a writer?

I have so m any ideas! I'm going to just stay holed up in my house, writing them all out. Oh! And I have a couple of short stories coming out this winter in anthologies by 7DS Books. All female super heroes, all written by women.
